Where do you get this idea??

We export from Thailand and all our invoices are in USD.  I have several Thai friends that own companies exporting everything is in USD.  When we get a wire transfer we can have it put in our USD account or our Thai baht account (which the bank dose the exchange at the current rate).

I did say at the beginning of my post it was a simple explanation and at the end of my post why the exporter did not just keep the USD.

As an exporter yourself you would understand that it’s not possible to receive all your revenue in one currency and have all your expenses in a different currency and never convert the currency to pay your bills.

In any event while there may by a few exceptions, exports through official channels are valued in THB ( at the end of the day) , they are taxed in THB, the local Thai laborforce that produces the goods is paid in THB, transportation is in THB, operating costs of the exporter are in THB so THB is needed to pay for all that. No matter whether the exporter or the importer converts the currency to Thai baht doesn’t change the fact that Thailand exports more than it imports and the resulting trade balance generates excess demand for THB which is the point of the post.

Nice of you to lecture others. More busybodies needed.

Yep, Canada is an open and diverse country......... but Thailand isn't, that's the reason for my question about origin......

Why do u think the Thai Baht is so strong....its because of the hgh overseas reserves that Thailand holds....one of the highest in the world....don't think they got those reserves from black market activities....being Number 1 or 2 exporter in the world of rice , rubber , sugar, sugar tapioca  plus hell of a lot of other stuff.

You are right about Thailand being a leading exporter of goods. The reason for the strength of the Thai Baht is basically twofold.

Firstly the foreigners coming to the country and us ex-pats bring in foreign money (as well as business, although 4 times more gets invested abroad that is invested by foreigners here). This money all ends up in the Central Bank coffers. It is worth approximately 4.5 Billion US a month. And in the coffers lies 250 Billion US; although not quite sure where it actually is.

Secondly the money coming into Thailand is considerably more than is being spent. There is little in the way of investment - especially in the North East - and although the austerity looks good on the balance sheet it does not help Thailand move out of the third world.

Plenty of very good reading on Thai Visa and Nationmedia for those wishing to delve deeper into this murky, money-minefield

I hope you don't mind me asking, but what nationality are you ?  You mentioned Vancouver, are you Canadian and what are you, Black, white, Asian ?  I'm asking because in Thailand it all matters...

Yes the comment was not meant as offensive, purely because you do get treated differently in Thailand depending on ethnicity.

Just how many of those tourists come to thailand for sex. Sex and the seedier is the biggest tourist drawcard. Fake products were a huge tourist draw,I remember the saying "buy a suitcase there, fill it up with brand names" so cheap. Thousands of tourists flock to the drug infested full moon party every year. All those retirees come here for the women, "sex pats " comes to mind. As the Thais are finding out, large quantities of Chinese families, does not equate to large quantities of revenue. They can buy everything cheaper in China. They spend little, but put a huge burden on the infrastructure. People that make money on the blackmarket and live on the fringes of the blackmarket, spend spend spend. If you have visited even 1 bar with girls selling themselves, or bought 1 item that is fake or taken 1 viagra that is generic, then you would be one of millions contributing to blackmarket. You should be deported bad guy out .

You had me in hysterical laughter.

How long have you been in Thailand?

Yes you know what happens from newspaper reports and sensational TV programmes.

I said genuine tourists, oh holier than thou greenchair...

Presumption breeds contempt.

The economy is not based on knock-offs and prostitution.

Auto parts - Thailand is one of the largest parts exporters

a very simple way to look at is that Thailand is a net exporter. In monetary terms the value of goods Thailand exports is greater than the value goods Thailand Imports. Foreign countries that import goods from Thailand have to pay for them in Thai Baht and because Thailand exports more than they import there are more people looking to buy Baht than sell it. It’s tough for the currency to weaken in the face of that demand unless there is a net outflow of baht into foreign assets.

You may say the exporters should just keep the foreign currency and not convert it but if you think it through the exporters need payment in Baht as all their costs are in baht, materials, wages, transportation etc etc, their taxes are in baht and their dividends are in baht as are their investment costs.

Great and thanks for the detailed answer. But car parts are not " a hell of a lot of other stuff"

Thailand got so strictly normal these days.

At the end of the day, it is the blackmarket that has driven the Thai economy since always. It is a multi trillion dollar industry. Time will tell if thai economy can flourish without it. I'm not optimistic that it can.

You are oh so wise. And Thai bashing.

Maybe you need to look up the definition of verbal bashing. There is nothing critical in the entire post, it merely states the facts.

Thailand is known for sex tourism.

Hundreds of foreigners die in thai road accidents every year.

There is a lot of corruption in Thailand.

These are facts. My post is the opposite of thai bashing, in that I see the entire black market as a positive thing. Nowadays it is recognised by academics as a whole different  (but profitable ) economic system. You need a cup of coffee with a shot in the morning to wake up to the reality of life. mate !

Nice try, but its a fail, and your insulting comment about "a shot in the morning", says a lot about you.

Yes, I need to apologise, you did not verbal bash. " Verbal,  Spoken rather than written; oral.

Thanks for the reply and hopefully it'll serve as a warning to others that they should at least carry some form of a passport with valid permission at all times.

I don't need any further proof that Thai jails are NoT inviting.

Q: Who  in their right mind holds a press conference at 1.30am?

A: Most likely someone who does not want any media, press to attend to face awkward questioning. Would be interesting to know how much notice was given re the event.

The new king hands out diplomas at 5 a.m. Maybe it's the new normal?
