Anger at new junta law banning populist policy

There are soooooo many things wrong in this story that it is difficult to know what to comment on. Let me focus on one small but important area; bad governance and third-world law making.

This is yet another example of Third-World law-making as it loosely defines a criminal/wrongful act but fails to provide a clear definition as to what precisely constitutes a violation of the act. What is the significance of this? It creates a situation whereby a well-meaning party can fall foul of the law because the definition of the law isn't clear. Put another way, the body tasked with deciding whether an offence has been committed has a 'carte-blanche' in deciding guilt or innocence based on... whether they are in a good mood or not.

What will happen under this law?

It is worth remembering the adage of Thai politics; "Yellows and Greens cheat. They cheat often. They cheat always. They cheat under any circumstances. They are cheating cheaters who cheat."

Yellow and/or Green governments will not have to worry as the law will not be applied to them. 'Red' governments or any other government not aligned with the PTB will be prosecuted. It is that simple.

Did anyone notice that Yingluck was prosecuted for her cabinet member's transgressions, yet Prayut isn't charged for his Cabinet members transgressions (think Prawit's watches)? It is just like that, except it'll apply across the entire budget and thus the entire government.

Third-world law for a third-world country.

Thais are nice people; they don't deserve stupid crap like this...

The influence of the globalists is now eminent. Watch for more to come.

Populus = the people........... not any more.

Actually, I disagree and here we are probably irreconciliably different. Even if the junta were to make everyone deliriously happy, it is at the cost of reducing the populace to infantilism and reducing their control of their own lives and their potential for self-respect. These are superior values in my view.

A bad democracy is better than a good word starting with d that we are not permitted to use

Fantastic post (above)! One of the best and most philosophically enlightened I have seen on Thaivisa for quite some months.

Many thanks for your words of wisdom (and I am not being sarcastic!). Great contribution to the debate.

You just reveal the elites and the military long term plan for Thailand. Inequality means less democracy and more plutocracy where the rich will dominate.

I want meet you wife's friends!

Believe me, you really don't. It is nothing like what you are imagining, unfortunately.

Do yourself a favour and stick to Pornhub, while I trawl the divorce forums...

I hope it does not get that far, I had a divorce a few years ago (even if it goes well financially) they will hurt. Still sometimes its better to have a divorce then to live on miserably. Best advice I can give is try to patch it up and if that is not an option see if you want to live on like this.

Best advice I would give is never do it in the first place but, apart from that, get out sooner rather than later.

I have known many close friends eventually finish it by 'a thousand cuts' when it could have been finished years earlier.  Is that populist?

No Idea but I was married and it was good.. the divorce was also  not bad. But married or not (just a piece of paper) breaking up always hurts especially after many years. Too much shared memory. Its easier when you hate each-others gut (though then the divorce is probably hell)

Europe/uk has been through workers revolutions to decrease the feudal system where by hundreds of thousands of people died. whereby now Uk/europe has gained far tighter rule of law and rights for people.

Thailand would be closer to iran/india in its civilization and way of life. Iran has had 2 revolutions in the last 100 years breaking away from feudal/claste system to be under a new religious form of dictatorship. India is still very much in the claste system and has yet to break down the feudal/claste system through revolutions

i would put Thailand in between  Iran and India in its development for a next stage of gaining more freedoms to people. Thailand has tried over the last hundred years to do this so maybe it can happen again with greater success.
