Hi, have just been advised by Thai Consulate in Brisbane, Australia that there is no guarantee expired Thai passport holder with be permitted entry by Thai Immigration. Lot of grief to obtain new Thai passport in Oz so intending to obtain in Thailand. Accordingly we were advised that as we intend to visit Thailand for more than 30 days wife should acquire a 60 day tourist visa on her Oz passport.

 

Can one of the specialist Mods provide guidance on the policy of Thai Immi guranteeing entry with expired Thai passport?

No problem to enter with a expired Thai passport. Just be sure she does not show her Australian passport to immigration.

Not sure a honorary Thai consulate would be able to give correct advice about a Thai passport. The embassy or the official consulate in Sydney would be a better choice.

If she entered on her Australian passport visa exempt she could apply for a one year extension at immigration as a returning Thai national.

no problem, my daughter came back with a 2 year old expired thai passport,

left America on her US passport

Than got her a new Thai one ( took 6 days)

Thanks - Can you advise cost, if any, for one year extension with Oz passport at airport Immi and if known usual waiting time to process?

 

EDIT: Wife will not have household card or Thai ID Card with her at airport

The fee will be 1900 baht. It will be done while she waits.

Why no ID card? The original house book I can understand since a copy would be enough.

The one-year extension of a 30-day visa exempt entry (or 60-day tourist visa) entry is not applied for at airport immigration. The extension costs 1,900 baht and you apply for it at the local immigration office near where you are living in Thailand. Normally, the extension as a Thai citizen should be granted on the day of application. You can apply up to the last day of the permission to stay from the tourist entry, but it is usually prudent to apply about two weeks earlier, just in case they ask for documents you do not have available.

Thanks again - ID Card lost, will get a new one when in Thailand. Household card at residence in Thailand.

It is a house book (tambien ban) not a card. Any chance somebody could scan page one of the book and the page she is registered on.

Instead of starting a new thread about the same subject, can anyone confirm if it is still the same rules for entering Thailand on an expired Thai passport?

 

Any source for this being the rule?  (Wife doesn't believe me/you!)

The constitution of Thailand is the source but it helps you only if your wife accepts the fact that she continues to be a Thai national after her passport expires.

Caution: Proving your wife wrong or proving yourself right can be dangerous. Proceed at your own peril.
 

I looked it up in an English translation of the Thai constitution, where it is in Section 39, paragraph 1:

I could also give you a link to the original Thai text made available by the Council of State but I have a feeling that your wife would prefer to read it directly from the Government Gazette. She can find it at the Pridi Banomyong Library, which Google Maps shows on the Thammasat University Tha Phra Chan Campus in Bangkok. The following reference will help her to locate the corresponding issue of the Gazette:
