Government delivering on its promise to female garment workers

The government has doled out nearly $1.8 million to about 18,000 female garment workers who have given birth thus far this year. According to a National Social Security Fund report obtained yesterday, 17,988 female workers delivered babies from January through May 1.

 

It said there were a total of 18,108 babies, with 118 women having twins and one having triplets. “In January, 3,881 female workers delivered 3,913 babies; in February, 4,430 female workers delivered 4,453 babies; in March, 4,822 female workers gave birth to 4,851 babies; in April, 4,690 female workers delivered 4,724 babies and on 1 May, 165 female workers gave birth to 167 babies,” it said.

 

The report added that so far this year, the government has paid more than 7.243 billion riel, or nearly $1.8 million, to those female garment workers who gave birth.
