BANGKOK, 4th May 2018 (NNT) - The Ministry of Commerce is looking into an online claim alleging a shop owner is charging customers an additional fee for using a social welfare card.

Commerce Minister Sontirat Sontijirawong has instructed Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce Whichai Phochanakij to investigate the claim which provides little detail about the shop.

According to the online claim, one shop owner allegedly asked customers to pay extra for using social welfare cards to buy goods.

The Commerce Minister said the shop would be removed immediately from the Blue-Flag scheme if such a claim turned out to be true. He also encouraged those witnessing any wrongful act to report to the Ministry of Commerce by dialing 1569.

Fiscal Policy Adviser of the Fiscal Policy Office Pornchai Thiraveja said there is no need for Blue Flag stores to impose a social welfare card fee on customers because they are entitled to tax refund.

What kind of "welfare" is available in Thailand???  I had always been told that there were no social programs of that type.

There wasn't before but now there is some.

Well guess what, there must be - that's why the article said social welfare card. Plus a quick search of the net could explain all to you.

Everyone wants a little slice of the pie. Those on the social welfare program really don't

have a lot. Scumbags like this shop owner need to be named and shamed.

There are welfare schemes for the destitute and the handicapped. Except their welfare is stolen from them by the civil servants who are supposed to distribute the funds to them.  So it has effectively become a "Civil Service Welfare Fund".
