Thousands Dead, Hundreds More Dogs Now Dying Due To Scare: Foundation

NAKHON PHANOM — Packed into pens and cages, they whimper behind rusty metal gates. Those who cannot fight for the meager food tossed to them – such as the tiny puppies being born amid the squalor – wait for death. Black flies burrow into sick-darkened fur.

Thousands of dogs have died of starvation or illness after being swept from their homes and dumped into an overcrowded animal facility in response to a recent rabies panic. Right now, only several hundred remain in dire conditions, according to those who have visited the facility in the far-flung province of Nakhon Phanom.

"Dalley said the panic prompted an overreacted and poorly considered response.  He said officials convinced people to surrender their pets when normal practice would be to have them kept indoors to first see if any symptoms develop."

a lot of those dogs are domesticated. and they end up in that dump even the healthy ones

i hope some thai's get enraged about this when they realize what's happened to their pets they were convinced to part with

and course parvo is gonna kill them all off if they don't separate them

I'd be ****** fuming

I'm not overly fond of dogs but like many there's no way I want to see them suffer like this.  But Thais have a sickly sentimental attitude towards strays. I live in one of the better housing estates, yet I can't go for a run in the evening because of the dogs.  It's really bad that they should face dog camp or lethal injection.

already we have a few of the usual control freaks trying to suffocate a thread on the voiceless who have been abused and mistreated. Shameful to be humans when some  treat other beings on this planet like this.

You're all heart.

This is no different than any other animal infestation. In this case there are people willing to pay for the dogs.

well where i live most of the houses have large parking ports out from with large gates and people don't let their dogs out on the streets with the strays. and they are pets and well looked after. do you know how they selected the dogs. they could have just walked to the houses where they saw dogs and convinced the owners to part with them for no real reason

I'm sure you are a vegetarian

Sorry but even with the rabies scare this is disgusting. I'm willing to bet that many of these dogs were taken from their homes irrespective of whether they had been vaccinated or not. One day Perhaps our canine friends will inherit the planet and make the world a better place.

So i take it that you are a vegan, or is killing animals for eating ok for you?

Good news but the numbers need to be in the hundreds of thousands to make real improvement. To all the animal lovers and those deluded enough to wish this on humans, are you really an animal lover? If you eat meat you are NOT,

Just look how "humans" treat other "humans".

Some of the above comments are as disgusting as this article.

Because your comment gives the impression that like many expats here in in Asia you have a vastly inflated opinion of your self importance and superiority.

Stating that children in Vietnam deserve to be fed meat from street dogs shows how much you think of yourself.

For your info' the days of the 'white tin god' in Asia have gone.

Once you have lived a few more years you might, if you think about, realise that people don't give any more of a sh-t for you than you do for them.

Have a nice day.

All I'm saying is that dogs meat is a commodity the same as pork or chicken. If more was shipped to dog eating countries we wouldn't have as many problems with dogs as we do now.

Cull the sick ones Ship the healthy ones.

There doing the same thing with pigeons in lopburi.

Can't see Thailand carrying through a thorough controlled clearance of the canine pests.  Something needs to happen.

I have had dogs most of my life, pets need to be given the appropriate injections and taken care of, here they simply dont want to spend the money on them. They open their gates and let them run free to crap in everyone elses areas, attack other dogs etc and dont care. I see sick dogs everywhere here because no one gives a sh*t about them, owners feed them boiled rice as if thats enough for a dog to grow strong, basically they get the dogs to either sell any pups or to stop people going near their houses but refuse to treat them well, walk them and actually spend time with them. Owners should have to register their dogs and pay fees to ensure they are  given all their shots, they should not be allowed to roam the streets unless they are on a leash and being walked by the owner, all strays should be rounded up and euthanized, this is the only way they will ever control  disease. Seeing dogs suffer like this is hard, they need to take more steps to ensure it doesnt happen again plus they need to remove the street dogs

Totally agree. Both my dogs so far are healthly ( checked and injected when required )

One of my favourite statements is 'if dogs could talk I would have no time for humans'

All the dipsh-ts who come out with 'feed them to the poor in other countries' should be culled and fed to the poor.

However until laws and rules on owning dogs are instigated and enforced not a lot will change.

Is this the part where we praise Buddhism's teachings of not hurting/killing others but just let them die a wretched death?

I will teach compassion 101 for free and I am one unsympathetic heartless bastard most cases just so we know where the bar is.

Yeah, but looking at this square on- whose doing the maltreating?

Ah those Thais certainly "love" their dogs, walkies everyday,a  nice meal not some old rice crap and yearly vet visits and a   good  brushing once a  week

. Thankfully they dont let them just wander the streets  causing accidents/injuries to other people etc etc

Ive woken up now.

They dont give a sheeeeet, that IS the true Thailand, same with rubbish, self self  self, lazy, dirty money grabbing  people in many  many cases.

In their rush to be seen as merciful and humain by not euthanizing those poor dogs in the first place, they cause ever a bigger sin by letting them suffer longer and die mistably... someone has to stop this stupid habits of 'saving dogs' and do away with excess animals even if it seems to cruel at first...
