It's not cruel to hang a water can around a dog's neck, says owner

It's not cruel to hang a water can around a dog's neck, says owner

The owner of some dogs in Krabi has defended her decision to hang water cans around their necks after they started chasing the locals.

Pla, 28, said she loves dogs.

She bought three mutts to guard a palm plantation but after they grew fierce and started chasing the locals she hung the plastic containers around their necks so they wouldn't bite - now they just bark.

She said she was advised to do this by elderly dog experts.

However, when reporters went to see her she had removed the containers after people online said it was cruel.

She told Thai Rath that if they continue to chase the neighbors she will get a chain and just tie them up.

"Me and my children all love dogs," she said.

  • That would be cruel to the neighbours.

  • These dogs are past training.    They are dangerous, chasing people around and need to be destroyed.   Very simple

  • Instead of training the dogs properly and thoroughly - they do this to them.   Yes: it is cruel!

well i rather like the container idea, dog can run faster than me, and she said the dogs are fierce and they are running wild, just waiting for a kid to get bit by one, then it will be, oh my dogs not done that before, SORRY

That is true , but the need then to guard her plantation and anything  else for that matter

would be gone. ( thieving locals)

So it would be,   a kind of win win,  Tie them up now

Good for her

I think she should be given a gold medal

Or should we wait for the headline about children being attacked by vicious uncontrolled dogs

At least she did something that does the dogs absolutely no harm

It's not cruelty

She told Thai Rath that if they continue to chase the neighbors she will get a chain and just tie them up.

That should have been her first idea.

I remember seeing a dog on Phuket with a coke can on his collar. Apparently he loved chasing chickens and killing them. In the can were a couple of stones and this device served to warn of his approach so the chickens could escape.

The advice was wrong in this instance, clearly, these are not elderly dogs.

I think I'll borrow the idea and hang a huge water container around the neck of MOL. That should keep her in check. As far as rabid MOLs are concerned that certainly isn't cruel. Now I just need to come up with something to stop her constant barking.

They always love these strays and feed them well, claiming to be the responsible owner.

Until the dog needs a vet because it has rabies, mange, fly eating it's hung out arse or is biting people.

Then they don't know who it belongs to and the public are left to deal with the consequences.

Excellent solution in my eyes. The dogs are still able to bark and run about, but they no longer have the confidence to bite because of the awkward containers. Good job.

It would have been even better to have trained them right in the first place, but that is not very likely to happen, from what I have seen of village life.

i have been seeing this for years on the islands and a freind of mine used it sucessfully train his dog to stop chasing burmese on motorcycles.

this is common practice and in no way harms the dogs.

good for her for doing something, sometimes the traditional remedies are best.

I think if you removed there legs that would also work.

yes, removing "there" legs indeed.

perhaps you would prefer euthanizing them, dead is the more humane option, right?

Don't forget the wai and a quick trip to the wat to kneel on the floor in front of a few disinterested monks, a quick donation in an envelope and all will be well.

The kids? unimportant. In Thailand if a kid dies you make another one. Easy.

Correct. They love money and status (which are, of course  closely related). Love anything else and it's infidelity - including the husband and kids.

It would slow the neighbours down though.

Thats quite a chip on your shoulder there.

must be difficult to perservere surrounded by people you hold in such low regard.

its also quite a leap from the original topic, but you seem to need to get it off your chest.

I think my neighbors would be just as noisy, chained or unchained.

Then just muzzle them as well.

Yes , you could euthanize all Soi / wild Dogs / dangerous dogs, dogs not looked after correctly by there stupid owners.  in Thailand tomorrow.

It would save lives and children  could play with out getting bitten by these things.

and also stop some road accidents caused by wild dogs.

it's the only way forward. :thumbsup::thumbsup:

given these dogs are on a coconut plantation,  where in the article does it indicate that they have proved to be a threat to either children or road users?

And where does it indicate these dog are not looked after by "there" owner?

Quite to the contrary, it seems that "there" owner in this case is taking responsibility to neutralize any threat the dogs may present.

in fact, it is her very actions to do something about the problem that are the basis of the story.

Apart from that you'r pretty much on the money. Not really. But next time I want a personal attack rather than a sensible comment, I'll know where to go and who to call on, you'll be about 8th on my list.
