"The Right Stuff" author Tom Wolfe dead at 88

Tom Wolfe, an early practitioner of "new journalism" who captured the mood and culture of America across five decades with books including "The Bonfire of the Vanities," "The Right Stuff," and "The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test," has died at the age of 88, his agent said.

 

Tom Wolfe, the best-selling author of fiction and an early practitioner of New Journalism, has died at the age 88.

 

That's according to his agent, who said the influential writer died of an unspecified infection at a New York City hospital.

 

Other than his white suits, Wolfe is best known for writing "The Bonfire of the Vanities," "The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test" and "The Right Stuff," novels that captured the mood and culture of America.

 

In the 1960s, Wolfe helped create New Journalism - a hybrid of news writing and more creative, literary prose.

 

Both his fiction and nonfiction works tackled issues of class, race, sex and power.
