THE OFFICE of Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) has hinted at the possibility of allowing people to grow marijuana for medical use.

“Three years from now, we may consider granting people such permission,” ONCB secretary-general Sirinya Sitdhichai said yesterday.

Earlier this week, the proposed amendment to the narcotics law got the nod from the Cabinet. The proposal aims to allow the use of marijuana for medical purposes.

“Marijuana can be useful for medical research,” Sirinya said.

He said researchers from Rangsit and Mahidol universities have already presented proposals seeking permission to grow marijuana for medical research on cancer therapies and pain alleviation.

At present, several countries have legalised marijuana for medical use to treat people suffering neurological conditions, terminal cancer, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

“While we will allow the growing of marijuana and its use for medical purposes, we will control such activities,” he said. “We will not allow marijuana use for entertainment purposes.”

He said his office had the authority to decide where marijuana could be planted.

International Narcotics Control Board chairman Viroj Sumyai said the United Nations had not banned the medical use of marijuana extracts.

“Marijuana is not completely banned. The government may use it for medical research and implement proper control measures for marijuana farms,” he said.

That is what they said in many parts of the United States where it is now legal.

It is known as "getting the camel's nose under the tent flap"

Making weed criminal just does not work (see 70 years of failed policy). Allow it, regulate it, tax it, and control it; it makes far more sense.

As i gaze into my magic crystal ball i can foresee how one day, some of the crop just disappear and a committee is set up to investigate what happened here while netzian whisper corruption corruption...

Hint or not, I remind Secretary-General Sirinya Sitdhichai of the ONCB that the Prime Minister has the final say on this matter....and every other matter. Just recently the PM put this plan on hold saying "more research was needed". There is a fortune waiting around the corner for many. All they need is the nod of approval from the PM.

The research has been done by much more qualified professionals in the U.S., why not just read their findings?  .... haha I know, I know.TIT

Thai people- you can get rich!

Legal + tax

Ch'ching !   All farmers should have an allowance to grow some weed.  It would help them get out of debt and bring some stability to their lives.  But that is doubtful that will happen.

It would be a win-win. The farmers would have a strong cash crop, the government would have tax revenue, and the public would have a less dangerous alternative to alcohol and ya-ba.

I wonder if it will be as hard as California to get a prescription ?

I can see $$$$ sign in their eyes now!! Anything is possible with $$$

Follow the example of Spain and allow some plants for personal use.
I think they are doing well with this attitude.

If someone mess around and try to sell it, hit him harder than now.

This will become legal when casinos become legal here. Don't hold your breathe.

Sheriff John Brown always hated me, for what, I don't know. Just spoke to daddy in law, he's okay with my plan. It looks much better than rice, doesn't it? :vampire:

Couldn't have said it better.
It stopped counting how often I heard the phrase from researchers: "But this is Thailand, you can't use the results from other countries"
