A litany of broken promises

The junta has failed to deliver on reforms or democratisation and seems to be preoccupied in entrenching itself
 

ALTHOUGH the military seized power in 2014 through a coup, the junta has done little to reform the country as promised and only tried to entrench itself to perpetuate its rule.

Junta gets thumbs-down in varsity survey

A survey of 2,175 university students found that most respondents believed the military coup did not solve the country’s problems, and the performance of the General Prayut Chan-o-cha-led government during the past four years was “bad or very bad”, according to the poll by the Thai Academic Network for Civil Rights.

Cinema closure too emotional an ending for loyal filmgoers

Decision on paraquat ban to be made on Wednesday

THAILAND’S National Committee on Hazardous Substances Control will on Wednesday decide whether to ban the domestic use of paraquat, a herbicide used to control weeds, after consumer protection and industrial groups joined hands to press for the ban.

Pattani school lifts its ban on wearing hijab

THE Education Ministry has defused a dress-code row at a school in Pattani province by giving the green light for Muslim students there to wear the hijab and long trousers in line with their religious rules.

Universal healthcare policy of greatest interest to Thais: poll

A Bangkok Poll found that 57 per cent of respondents to its survey identified free medical coverage or universal healthcare as the policy of greatest interest to them, followed by farm aid (54.4 per cent); those involving welfare, cost of living and income (48.3 per cent); assistance for the underprivileged and the poor (48 per cent), anti-corruption measures (45.7 per cent) and infrastructure (27.7 per cent).

Five years of commitment to keep Phuket’s beaches clean

CBBC celebrate 5 successful years, over 125 beach cleaning sessions since the initiative began

Phuket’s Clean the Beach Boot Camp (CBBC) has been cleaning the island’s beaches for five years. Each two weeks, on a Saturday morning, volunteers assemble for a free beach workout from island fitness leader Krix Luther and then, in return, they put on their gloves, grab a big bag and pick up rubbish on the beaches.

Although there has been laws preventing short-term property rentals acting as ‘hotels’, the law has been loosely enforced with some condo developments around the country acting as defect hotels and listing in many online booking websites.
