BANGKOK, 11 June 2018 (NNT) – Thailand's Prime Minister has lauded agencies and organizations, both public and private, that have contributed to the environmental effort, while assuring his government is taking the waste problem seriously.

Prime Minister’s Office Spokesman, Lt Gen Sansern Kaewkamnerd, said Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has voiced appreciation towards the Tourism Authority of Thailand and the activities it conducts in cooperation with public and private organizations to promote environmentalism, such as the Trad Dream Islands Run 2018, which saw runners on June 2 and 3 collecting garbage along their marathon route.

Another such activity was the World Ocean Day event in Phuket, wherein 60 business operators from the continent of Africa took part in garbage collection along Patong Beach.

Lt Gen Sansern indicated that the PM reiterated that, over the past four years, his government has given importance to dealing with waste and even made it a national policy to rid the country of a buildup of 30 million tons of garbage while also handling the 27 million tons produced each year. The government has sought to instill discipline in citizens to deal with garbage at its sources as well as to recycle. Private organizations have also been encouraged to use eco-friendly packaging and to replace plastic containers.

For the country’s oceans, the national policy on garbage mandates that marine national parks must be plastic bag free. So far 15 provinces have piloted the effort along with an aim to have 24 beaches free of cigarette ends and garbage. The work has already garnered commendation from the United Nations.

Surely this report is wrong and instead he is congratulating them on becoming the No.1 "garbage bin of the world".

Environmental efforts? What environmental efforts? There aren't any. Thailand is one of the world's biggest polluters and is doing nothing about it. Phuket beach cleanup? You've got to be kidding.

How about charging people for disposable bags, like in Europe? It would be a token effort to the environmental effort.

I know, it's not going to happen. Thais never do anything till they have to...or it's too late.

The problem with 'encouragement' is that private enterprise only cares about things that effect its profits. Government needs to man-up and let the dogs out!

He obviously doesn't read the Papers and see the reports about the dead whale, the illegal import of Electronic Waste,  The millions of tons of rubbish produced in Thailand and dumped everywhere, The black water being pumped into the sea at so called Tourist beauty spots, Air pollution and the list goes on for ever.......

This 4 years under junta rule has seen the environmental situation o my worsen. Who in their right mind would choose a time like this to commend efforts?

Just this week Thailand's been called the worlds dustbin, the pilot whale chokes on plastic, reefs are depleting, massive floating islands of rubbish and the only efforts they can reference are a couple of beach clean up fun days (involving foreigners)

Deliberate amnesia?

  • Doi Suthep hillside development and Kingsgate gold mine.
  • Support for the Krabi coal-fired power plant including military escort.
  • Use of Article 44 to waive environmental laws and regulations such as with EEC and Chinese dual rail projects.

The Thai people don't need Prayut's brand of environmental efforts.

I've been to city hall in Pattaya a few times for different reasons.

The place seems very quiet.  No sight of any body seeking action to do anything at all.  I'd expect that things are exactly how everyone is content with.
