Foreign owners of e-waste companies said by police to have broken the law

At least 11 operators of e-waste separation businesses in Thailand have committed several wrongdoings, Deputy National Police Commissioner Pol General Wirachai Songmetta disclosed yesterday.

“Their import, transportation and separation are not in line with the laws,” he said.

According to Wirachai, the firms had operated 26 waste plants under foreign ownership.

“Most of them have also engaged in creative accounting,” Wirachai said.

“They have wired money overseas against our laws”.

He said relevant authorities such as the Industrial Works Department and the Pollution Control Department have already taken action against the operators.

“They may be closed,” the deputy national police chief said.

Without proper treatment, e-waste will pollute the environment and threaten the health of people.

Wirachai said the Customs Department had now intercepted several containers on suspicion that they might have been trying to smuggle e-waste into Thailand.

He added that local authorities had also conducted searches at many sites in areas under their jurisdictions to prevent the illegal handling of e-waste.

Try to send a package from overseas using a carrier service or even normal mail and the custom will be all over it opening it for inspection and in most cases make you pay tax and duties, why is it than, that containers full of prohibited and dangerous material are allowed to be imported in to this country ? dose someone at the custom turns a blind eye to what is going on?...

Sounds like they already have Thai companies lined up to take their places....In Thailand, it's WHO you know and then WHAT you know!

I thought foreign companies were 51% Thai owned?

Pesky foreigners taking our polluting jobs is bang out of order and add creative accounting our face is lost.

Stop your bleating coopers, you will get your pay day soon. Then Thailand can be the hub of E waste.

And who are the Thai police to call judgement on who breaks the law when every man bar none in the RTP breaks the law themselves. It would be different if they were honest cops but they are not and never will be. If they were their words might mean something and they might receive some respect.

Not all, it is possible to own 100% though BOI.

Why don't the Thai owners holding a majority share (51%) in these businesses receive any rap? Where they not also involved to the tune of at least 51% in "creative accounting" practices, "wiring money overseas" illegally, engaging in business operations "not in line with the law" and/or reaping the profits?

How can a company of which more than half of the shares are held by locals be categorized as being "foreign owned" anyway? Isn't it rather a joint venture with majority Thai ownership?

And if the companies in question were established under BOI rules with 100% foreign ownership, why was this granted and why were these companies not properly monitored as per their business operations?

Ah, questions over questions. But as long as the Thais can - as usual - fling all the mud at those darned foreigners...

So far regarding trash situation...those guys are not Thais!

They are upset that foreigners are taking  Thai jobs !  It is their right to pollute and destroy the country and make money from it. Dont need outside help.

Does not appear to Thai/Chinese.

Does this imply that all e-waste firms are foreign-owned or does it imply that Thai-owned operations operate within the law and the pesky foreigners are not?

Whatever, it reads to me yet another xenophobic reaction by the Thai authorities.

Sure, Thailand has plenty of laws - just zero law enforcement.

You sound confused. I know where most of us come from, the cops practice law enforcement. But here, it is all about revenue collection. A very tiny percentage of them have anything to do with law enforcement. It is selective, and based on money to be earned. It has NOTHING to do with the good of the people, public or traffic safety, or the improvement of Thai society.

And you are right. The toy police here deserve no respect, and get none from this poster.
