At odds with Trump over trade, Canadians say they will avoid U.S. goods: poll

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Seventy percent of Canadians say they will start looking for ways to avoid buying U.S.-made goods in a threat to ratchet up a trade dispute between Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and U.S. President Donald Trump, an Ipsos Poll showed on Friday.

 

The poll also found a majority of Americans and Canadians are united in support of Trudeau and opposition to Trump in their countries' stand-off over the renegotiation of the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

 

Amid the spat, Trump pulled out of a joint communique with six other countries last weekend during a Quebec summit meeting of the Group of Seven rich nations and called Trudeau "very dishonest and weak."

 

Trump was reacting to Trudeau's having called U.S. steel and aluminum tariffs insulting to Canada. Trudeau has said little about the matter since a Trump Twitter assault.

 

Despite the tensions, 85 percent of Canadians and 72 percent of Americans said they support being in NAFTA, and 44 percent of respondents in both countries said renegotiation of the deal would be a good thing for their country.

 

While the poll showed support for a boycott of U.S. goods in Canada, pulling it off could be difficult in a country that reveres U.S. popular culture and consumer goods over all others. Canada is the largest market for U.S. goods.

 

TRUDEAU OVER TRUMP

 

The poll showed 72 percent of Canadians and 57 percent of Americans approved of the way Trudeau had handled the situation, while 14 percent of Canadians and 37 percent of Americans approved of Trump's behavior.

 

More than eight in 10 Canadians and seven in 10 Americans worry the situation has damaged bilateral relations.

 

Canada has vowed to retaliate against U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminum with tariffs against a range of U.S. goods, a move supported by 79 percent of Canadians, according to the poll.

 

By contrast, Americans opposed escalating the situation. Thirty-one percent of Americans said they favored even stronger tariffs, and 61 percent said other elected U.S. officials should denounce Trump's statements.

 

Canadian respondents also signaled approval of the united front their politicians have shown, with 88 percent saying they welcomed the support of politicians from other parties for the Liberal government's decision to push back on tariffs.

 

While Canadian consumers appeared ready to boycott U.S. goods, 57 percent of Canadians and 52 percent of Americans said Canada should not overreact to Trump's comments because it was just political posturing.

 

The Ipsos Poll of 1,001 Canadians and 1,005 Americans - including 368 Democrats, 305 Republicans and 202 Independents - was conducted June 13-14. It has a credibility interval of 3.4 percentage points.

This is all because Canada canceled the tv series Arctic Air.  It was one of the Canadian shows that Americans actually watched and enjoyed.

Magazines - Most are controlled/published by the two largest Canadian media groups Rogers or Quebecor

Retail- The majority of retailers are small. The large chains are multinational, and to be blunt, Target failed in Canada. Canadian Tire  has expanded.

Groceries- Wrong again. Much as in Thailand, a small number of wealthy families control some of the largest retailers in Canada   Metro, Loblaws, Empire Corp. controls Sobeys & Safeway are all Canadian.

 

Yes, for a large period of time, Canadians have found it easier and cheaper to purchase  US products. Guess what? Go on.

With the blackmail of NAFTA and the bullying of  the USA, Canada has cut some  supply deals with other countries, like a free trade deal with the EU which has lifted tariffs. It's also dusting off its plan B and plan C to purchase  more basic products such as fruit & vegetables from mexico and Latin America. In return Canada will send its pork, beef and poultry. Canada  has concluded a free trade deal with South Korea. 

 

This time it is going to be different. There was already a dislike of Trump, and the most recent display of bullying has united Canadians in their dislike of the US government and Trump. When Canada's very conservative politicians are on the same page as  liberals, it's obvious there is a common cause.

 

Trump was disliked in Canada, but now with his threats, he has forced his sympathizers in Canada to choose between loyalty to their country and support  of a slimy  bully.

 

It's up to the US electorate to vote him out. Until then they can suffer the cost of  his stupidity, and suffer they will.

With Safeway selling all it's stores to Empire the major grocery stores are Canadian. The 3 major tv networks are Canadian owned. Walmart has 410 stores that will be picketed starting July.

we need a worldwide boycott of US goods to bring that slobbering trump to his knees

as an american, i'd say canada is the best neighbor a country could ever have.  i doubt there is a better border/neighbor relationship in the history of earth.  i'm all for trump and his team in terms of evaluating trading relationships.  however, it is truly insulting to canada to use the 'national security' thing to get around the normal procedures for any trade dispute.

Agreed, and there is one other inconvenient truth that Trump's enablers have failed to tell him ... there is NO trade deficit with Canada.

Another observation. 

In my experience, Canadians think A LOT more about the USA than Americans think of Canada. Also, a fairly significant percentage of Canadians do harbor at least mildly resentful feelings about the USA while very few Americans feel negatively about Canada (which makes sense if you're not thinking about it at all).

That imbalance didn't hurt the long history of excellent foreign relations between the two countries, and I really don't think the recent "trump" theatrics are going to foment many Americans to hate on Canada either, even among his fans.

Hopefully this noise will pass just as hopefully "trump" is removed ASAP.

they polled all the Canadians and Seventy percent of Canadians say they are going to avoid buying US products.  I don't believe that for a minute.
For one they didn't poll all the Canadians and I don't think 70% of the Canadians give a crap. Another thing I don't believe is Reuters.

Weren't they the ones that reported Jared Kushner was in Iraq when he wasn't?

I the US has a trade deficit with Canada it would not be an incredible  intelectual feat to conclude that Americans buy more Canadian goods.

From what I have read- it is the fact that Trump has used the provisions that Canada is somehow a threat to the US National Security .  Ths has infuriated Prime Minister Trudeau since Canada has been a long term US Allie and fought alongside Americans in several wars.

 

as an American- I have visited Canada many time- always enjoyed my visit- wish we could get some of the great Canadian beer here in Thailand.

 

Trump's style is insulting to  most people- He will gain nothing by insulting America's allies except a loss of income for America .

 

Trump has many Americans bamboozled-  The greatest threat to the American economy is China and certainly not Canada, Mexico or the EU yet Trump lifted sanctions on a Chinese  High Tech Company that committed economic espionage against America and was caught.  Trump never met a dictator he didn't like.

I think the vast majority of Americans do not support bullying our friendly Northern good neighbor. But the rabid part of the "trump" base follows his destructive tantrums blindly. It's a cult of a truly disgusting fascistic personality. The fact that he is president is a daily embarrassment to decent Americans.
