Hi... due to a mistake in travel planning arrangements, my wife's parents will overstay their 14 day visa by 1 day unless we change our plans. I'd rather not do that at this point, as if the fine is truly 1,000 bath (500 each person per day) and there's little possibility of a "black mark" on their passport, that's less costly than rearranging everything. We'll be leaving Thailand at the Aranyapathet border crossing in case that matters. Is it really just as simple as paying the fine and moving on? Or are you stuck in border purgatory until such time as the Gods permit you to move on ?? In all seriousness, I don't want to put my parents in law in any dicey situation of course. Any advice you have would be appreciated.

They will get a overstay stamp after the paying the 50O baht fine for one day of overstay.

Normally a one day overstay is not considered a big problem by immigration.

If concerned about the overstay stamp they could apply for a extension, pay 1900 baht and be granted 7 days to leave the country after it is denied.

The 14 days is not a visa entry it is visa exempt under a reciprocal  agreement for ASEAN citizens. And the 14 days granted includes both day of entry and day of departure so if, for example, they enter on July 1 their permission to stay is up on July 14, not 15th. So double check if it will thus  be just 1 day overstay or 2.

If it is just 1 day and they depart by plane there is no fine and AFAIK no stamp either though UbonJoe can correct me on that if I am wrong.  So might be worth considering that, it will also save the time of travel to the border, and airfares on AirAsia can be  quite low if booked well in advance.

From your post in the health forum, it is likely the mother will need further trips to Thailand for medical care so it would be best to avoid an overstay stamp, especially if she will usually come and go through Poipet.

Another option would be for them to get tourist visas, that will allow them 6o days in country and possibility to extend another 30.

Many controls of police and military at Sakeo before Aranyaprathet. They use to check all cambodian people`s  passports but they don`t look at other passport.Clearly they track illegal khmer people.

Be carrefull even if 1 day of overstay, they will ask you to get off the bus or minivan.I used to cross there many time.

It is more likely now, than before, that they will check everyone.

Just wanted to thank everyone for their input. I think we're going to play it safe, as Sheryl recommended, since her mom may need to return for medical care in the future and we don't want to jeopardize her ability to make those visits.

I have a similar issue whereby my girlfriend’s 14 days end on Friday but we have a ticket to fly from Don Muang on Saturday thus overstaying by 1 day. Is she likely to have a problem flying from Don Muang?

She will not have a problem leaving. She will not be fined for the one day of stay at Don Mueang.
