Been on Keto diet, no sugar, no carbs.

Went to do a blood test today to check how things were, and was gung ho about Fasting Blood Sugar, though it would be real good this round..... surprise...... was the same as pre Keto ( in the limit, but upper).

Dr  said Diet Coke contributes to the result ( confessed, drank way too much ) and also protein....

Any insights?

Want to reduce, and will buy a blood sugar tester to see if dietary changes pay off.

Thanks

This is called the dawn phenomenon. Check Google for it. It always happens with low-carbers.

It will last for a few months, and it only happens early morning and after fasting,  but your overall blood sugar will level out much lower than before. Your HBA1C will eventually be under 5%.

Don't worry and KCKO

Also, doctors have absolutely no clue about how the human body behaves when doing keto. All the guidelines and recommendations are designed around high carb diet. Unfortunately, if you are on keto, you need to dig deep to find infos on everything.

Look for Jason Fung, dr Berg and other keto experts if you want to know more about this phenomenon. It is absolutely normal. And no, diet Coke will not elevate your blood sugar but will increase your cravings that reasults in eating more.

Ketoers also have glucose in their. body as the brain runs on glucose, and there are the hormones who play a major role in glucose and insulin production.

I ordered the Precision Xtra Blood Glucose & Ketone Monitoring System on Amazon and had it sent here to Thailand so I could monitor exact ketone numbers and see when I was actually in Ketosis and also have this meter to check glucose levels also as it does both when you order the separate strips . I would suggest you have Hospital check insulin levels along with A1C and fasting glucose as it's much better indicator of insulin resistance and other issues related to glucose metabolism ( checking actual insulin levels is so helpful and something's Dr.'s almost never test . Also if you really want to get full picture do a three hour glucose tolerance test with a 75gram glucose dose and at every hour as the are taking blood have them do not just glucose levels on the hour(s) but also insulin levels ( this is known as the Kraft Glucose Tolerance test )

Again this Precision Xtra monitor you can order cheap with strips on Amazon is a real useful tool if you are going to be experimenting with getting into a state of ketosis at times . PM me if I can help and definitely give up and diet sodas asap if you can .

Thanks - good info. I am not that concerned about am I in Ketosis of not, I follow the diet strictly with no excursion into carbs and sugar - yesterday blood test confirmed - 2+ for ketones ( yearly health check was always “negative”) . Will look deeper into it

Garrya - read the links I sent , helpful and explains the peak in the morning. I still don’t get why I’m at same sugar level in 3 months of Ketosis as before when I was very heavy onto carbs and sugar

Ps - bought a cheap accu sugar tester - 2pm ( well after morning breakfast - 92 score )

Take your glucose monitor with you next time you go to hospital to get your fasting blood glucose done and when they draw blood also use your meter to test and compare results .... most meters are around 20-25 % inaccurate up or down so you could be much lower or higher than you think .

Since this is level within normal range, it is because your body is effectively burning fat to produce the glucose it needs.

Nothing wrong with it.

There is no need to reduce an already normal fasting glucose level.

ps...  will reduce Pepsi max, but good to know. I dont actually feel hungry drinking it, and dont eat more

I was a Pepsi Max addict, nearly two liters a day after I quit sugared soft drinks after triple by-pass cardiac surgery.  Then I read about some of the harmful effects of the Max and other diet soft drinks and realized I was doing myself no favors drinking them.

Problem was, cold water simply doesn't do it for me; I crave flavor.

I found that making quantities of flavored iced teas: mint, apple, peach, various berries and the Thai "Number One Tea" really fulfilled my need for flavor and did the thirst quenching job pretty well, unlike Pepsi Max which always left me wanting more.

I've been following a less than strict lo-carb diet...I do allow myself occasional indulgences.

I've dropped 20 lbs over the last four months and all my blood numbers are where they should be so it seems to be working for me.

I find adding just a splash of unsweetened fruit juice to water makes it very refreshing. Mostly I use apple juice or cider, or lemon juice.

A bit banal, but drew a trend line.....  seems ( with R^2 matching ?  )  about 115 grams per day on average.

26 April until 20 June  = 55 days
