Couple killed as van hits sidecar

By The Nation

A couple were killed when their bike sidecar was allegedly hit by a speeding van in Chon Buri province on Saturday morning.

Police said the accident happened at 6.30am on the Si Racha-bound Sukhumvit Road in Tambon Bang Phra, Si Racha district.

One of the victims was identified by his identification card as Dusit Tharasak, 44, a local resident of Tambon Bang Phra. The other victim was a woman who has yet to be identified as she carried no ID card.

Police said the van driver, Mana Klinhom, 49, did not halt at the scene of the accident but drove two kilometres before he stopped and waited for police there.

Mana reportedly told police that he did not intend to flee but he was frightened after the accident.

He admitted that he was driving fast but he said the sidecar changed lane suddenly from the right to the middle lane in front of his van, as a result he was unable to stop in time.

Wishful thinking.....he'll be back driving when the vans repaired...it is pathetic here sometimes!

A motorbike and sidecar loaded with three people "suddenly" changing lanes?.....come on now.

Your all quick to assume guilt!

Motorcycle & "sidecars" as I understand are illegal here, bet the driver had no insurance or license, some of the worst 'drivers" on the road pilot these things!

All though he was speeding those motor bike and sidecars are a menace

He should have said his brakes "failed",the usual excuse,

and he would would be OK.

RIP the dead, taking your life in your hands everyday you go on the roads.

They are tricky to steer even at low speed, I doubt his story, but he'll get away with it.

Is that a polite way of saying they are a death trap waiting for an accident to happen?

They are all home made and have no brakes on the third wheel, so as such are illegal :shock1:

My policeman brother-in-law has one. Says it all, really. Whether something is illegal or not has absolutely no relevance in Thailand.

That's right, same as Any Law,,,, Nobody gives a Hoot,,,,

dont be so hasty in judgement,

sidecars are notoriously difficult to control

and it wouldnt surprise me one bit if the culprit

is now dead as a direct result of his own action

As I have said on other threads, these contraptions are involved in a disproportionate number of accidents relative to their occurrence or frequency. They tend to want to change direction quickly and in a jerky manner, particularly when driven at speed, and the "pilot" often comes from the least educated, least precaution-taking section of the population. Passengers almost never wear helmets, the thought that they should would never enter their heads. They often have defective lights or no lights at all.

Had one for several years not difficult to drive just steer like a car instead of a bike. load of rubbish being said here by those with no experience ,accident down to drivers error ,but bike or SUV take your pick as none of us saw it

It's even incredible that it still needs to be told

Vehicular manslaughter & fleeing the scene of a crime.

Whatcha you gonna do about it Thailand?
