The Anti-Money Laundering Office's (Amlo) transaction committee says it has frozen 77 accounts worth Bt25.55 million linked to 64 alleged online bets, deputy secretary general Pol Maj Gen Romsit Wiriyasan said on Wednesday.

Romsit said Amlo investigated websites that allowed people to bet online on sport and the frozen account owners needed to account for their assets in court or risk the balance being seized by the state.

The websites included www.bkk999.com, www.fifa555asia.com, www.hlthailand.com, and www.sport4xonline.com, he said.

Romsit said it was just the first step and Amlo would further track the transactions to try to arrest the online gambling bosses.

He said Amlo sought cooperation from banks to monitor transactions via e-payment apps that might be used for online betting.

I don't much care about online gambling, it's a victimless crime as far as I'm concerned. I AM curious about stopping intrusive governments as a whole - couldn't these folks have used VPN's and the dark web to have avoided this nonsense?

Not if the transactions involve the gambler transferring money into a Thai bank account.

All the police have to do is make a small test purchase with one of the betting websites. As soon as the police transfer the money they can freeze the bank account.

Alternatively they can then monitor the account for a build up of funds and then freeze it at an opportune moment.

Let's not turn this thread into a guide of how to use technology to bypass police prosecution of gambling.

It must be a very difficult job for the authorities to keep track of which schemes/corruption/crimes etc. are to have a blind eye turned to and which ones are to be pursued for prosecution.

Well that was a waste of police resources. Carnage still on the roads I see.

25.55m baht of gambling payments "frozen".......account owners needed to account for their assets in court or risk the balance being seized by the state.

Any gamblers out there who would be inclined to bet that money will end up being put in a "Special Projects" bin labelled:

"For Politicians and Senior Civil Servants Only"

Thai people gamble.

Stop crying.

It normal.

Any date set for the all you can eat & drink and take away party at the Amlo headquarter?

Gambling!

If the powers in the Kingdom want quash gambling, why am I getting this text from True?

Depends maybe these people go out robbing people and stealing from parents to pay for their gambling habit, same argument is used for drug users. (I don't agree with the argument for either of them) But there are plenty of people who don't see this as victim-less. Just like drugs there are people who have no self control and gamble their house away.
