ED Visa - Cancellation + Border Run/New Tourist Visa

Featured Replies

Hello all,

I've searched around for an answer to my situation, but could not seem to find a consistent answer. Hopefully someone can provide some insight.

I am currently on an ED Visa due for an extension in the next month. My language school has ceased contact with me, I am unable to get through to them. (Bit worried about it being a scam)

My visa/school was applied for in the Khon Kaen region (I was staying there for a while) but I am now in Chiang Mai. I only plan to stay for another 3 months. I'm hoping to do a land crossing at Mae Sai a couple of times (2 in a calendar year) to give me the time I have to wait.

I believe I have to cancel my ED Visa before attempting the land crossing as I may be denied.

I can't get a letter from the school, but would I be able to write a letter informing immigration that I wish to cancel my visa?

Do I go to Chiang Mai immigration? Or would I be better mailing a letter to Khon Kaen immigration? Or can I take a letter to the border at Mae Sai?

Also, am I correct in the assumption that obtaining a visa on entry at Mae Sai would grant me 30 days (+30 extension at Chiang Mai Immigration), and if I did the process again in 60 days, I could get a total of 120 before leaving the country more permanently?

Thanks for your time!

Dan

What exactly do you have now? Are on a 90 day entry from a non-ed visa or the extension of stay obtained at immigration?

If on an an extension I have seen no reports of Mae Sai wanting to see a letter from the school stating you are no longer attending school.

You will get a 30 day visa exempt entry that can be extended for 30 days. You could then do it one more time this year.

I am within the initial 90 days granted when the visa was first approved. Due to expire (or require an extension) soon.

So if I were to leave before the date stamped on my visa/departure card, it would essentially signal the end of my ED visa and clear me for a tourist visa at Mae Sai?

No problem to leave the country since you only have a 90 day entry from the non-ed visa.

That is fantastic! Thank you for your help! It can be hard to find a clear answer sometimes.

So my situation is basically the same as taking a 3 month course on my ED visa, right?

Leave at the end of the 90 days as if I were leaving from a 60 (+30) days tourist visa?

I have also read on several visa sites, that re-entering by land only grants a 15 day visa, but visa run services suggest it's 30 days (+30 extension) via Mae Sai 2x per year. Just want to confirm that's correct also?

Once again, thanks for your help!

It is no different than leaving at the end of a stay from a tourist visa.

The 15 day entry rule was rescinded in January of 2017 when the limit of 2 visa exempt entries at land border crossings rule went into effect.
