work permit for uk expat

Featured Replies

Hi all, wanted to know the best route for getting a work permit, really i would like to get one without starting a ltd company, is this possible? Im married to Thai woman and have 2 kids with her, i know i can get a marriage visa which can lead on to getting a work permit but cant seem to find out if i can do it without going down the company route as we could be running more than one business, and from what ive read the work permit for a company is specific to that company/business, so you cant work legally doing something else?......

You could register a partnership with your wife with one million baht of registered capital to meet the requirements for a work permit.

thanks ubonjoe............il look into it....

However you get the WP you will be limited to the work and location specified in the WP. You can (conditional) have more than one WP.

It is possible to have a work permit for company or partnership and have more than on business operating under it. It is possible to have more than one location shown on the work permit.

really guys, im just trying to avoid starting a ltd company and avoiding the initial and ongoing fees that go with it, in an ideal world i would like to start a small business with my wife and both be able to work without forming an expensive ltd company.......is this possible? can you get a work permit just based on marriage to work anywhere or in a partnership (non ltd company)......or do you HAVE to start a ltd company to get a work permit, in the UK my wife got a spouse visa and could work for anyone anytime or be self employed as a sole trader, partnership or a director/employee of a ltd company.................i could be over thinking it and forming a small 1 million baht ltd partnership may not be so bad or expensive, im just trying to find out if this is the only way to do it?....cheers

My lawyer told me I am not limited to working only in my office. As Managing Director I may go anywhere to check on workers, to see if training is going OK , to check on workers conditions. job progress et al. I've even held a screw driving while training".

You can do it with a partnership. The partnership could have more than one location that could be shown on your work permit.

It is also possible for your wife to register a sole proprietorship and you could get a work permit for working at it.

sorry for my ignorance Joe......but do you mean ordinary partnership or limited partnership?.....and in both cases a would a work permit be possible? as a ordinary partnership seems more appealing......cheers

Either a basic or a limited partnership will allow you to get a work permit.

The duties of your job and locations where you will work need to be declared when applying for the WP. Checking training is going ok would probably be ok anywhere, but you carrying out training at a specific or several locations needs permission.
