Where is the nearest best place to go and catch big fish to Chiang Mai?

 

Is Chiang Rai any good or do you need to travel as far as Nong Khai?

 

Are you able to catch very big fish in the river or do you need to go to private lakes? 

 

Any suggestions welcome. I'm no fisherman but my friend visiting from England is very experienced in fishing lakes in UK and France. Not interested in sea fishing and want to stay in Northern Thailand. 

 

Any advice most appreciated, including best times of the year, places, etc.
