But the free use of deadly pesticides and weed killers are ok?

Evidently.

Paraquat for Gawd's sake. Nasty but commonly used to kill off grass around sugar cane. Several folk in our village have physical and neurological  problems from that stuff (exacerbated a cavalier ignorance of safety clothing and processes).

Very ugly.

So the USA banned them in June, other countries did so years ago, it's just appeared on the Thai agenda and they are congratulating themselves on the speedy implementation!

The Thai way is to see what other countries do and secretly follow with a statement claiming their health/medical experts after much investigation have found problems.you know the people I'm talking about, the ones that approve paraquat.i must give them so praise on this one though as it only took 10 yrs to follow.

hydrogenated fats are bad. Some saturated fats are good.

Round up by Monsanto is being sued in the USA

Yep, Glyphosate (generic name, as it is sold here) is dubious, but pales in comparison to Paraquat, which is just nasty.

Given the lax control of anything in Thailand I am waiting for the first independent and undercover lab test report.

On the other hand I guess the big franchise names wouldn't welcome any bad propaganda so they'll probably stick to this regulations.

Good first move!  This will be a hit on a large food corporations that don't give a hoot about peoples' health and only care about their bottom line.  Use cheap and harmful ingredients at the expense of the unknowing and uninformed consumers.....

I hear you and I wish it could be true , but TIT , it will never happen .  Why would Thailand be the first country in the world to ban trans fat completely?

A minesterial order , what does that mean ?   No more Mr Donut, I just don't believe it, look at the donuts in charge of the government..

A study performed by  the Thai labs/government or someone else?

Do they really think that getting rid of trans fat will make Thais slimmer and healthier?  Completely nonsense.

If Thais go back to eating only spicy Thai food , and start exercising , then they will go back to normal weight again , like it used to be 50 years ago .

Trans fat alone is just a small part of the problem .

Independent laboratory. Possibly outside Thailand.

Trans fats surely not good for your health but sugar is much worse.
And Thais love sugar and sweet foods.

Well now they are vulnerable to a class action suit. They are hand in hand with the GM pressure groups and they developed Agent Orange to defoliate the jungles in Vietnam causing dreadful harm to generation after generation.  Profiteering poisoners on a global level but the Thai haters ignore such callumny and white about local farmers using parquet or DDT. To these people I say: try running a small profitable farm with pesticides and insecticides. Most of the critics came from countries that invented these chemical....and plastic bags...and plastic straws.

Why not ban MSG while they are at it.........

Time will tell.  If getting rid of trans fats fixes the obesity problem.  Especially in the west. But I'll keep my money on sugar and wheat which is sugar in disguise that causes the addictive eating habit and makes people fat and unhealthy. Stick with meats veg and natural healthy fats.

It's unfortunate that the same word is used for the food source and the physical appearance of being over weight. Calling sugars fat and fats sugar would change the mindset.

Dr Atkins started the revolution of low carb, but it's being ignored by doctors,  government and science much like renewable energy.  There's no money in it. If you stop the selling of bread and all the sweets in the supermarkets the economy would die. Anyway if you are suffering from ill health and you you've tried the low fat way give Atkins eating a try. After awhile the addictive sugar demon will subside. As for trans fats. Atkins rule is they are bad too. Other fats, ok. If you are curious about Atkins I'm happy to share my experience.

I am interested to hear of your experience with the Atkins diet and its effects on you .

Those who do not care should be free to continue to damage their cardiovascular system. The rest of us, like me, cook on pork fat which is much healthier and tastes much better, too.

That's not entirely fair.

I used to try to keep abreast of the advice, but partly gave up when it became obvious that the 'expert' advice frequently changes to the opposite a short while later....

Is this fat stuff news the resson for the rise in the price of oil palm nuts?

These corporations should be forced to replace these dangerous substances with natural ones, like real milk butter, pork fat, eggs, etc. I always read the labels and do not buy these cheap replacements containing naturally identical flavours to fool the customers. Unfortunately, more is needed to be done to raise the awareness since many people are unaware of the risks or even what they buy. That is the only way to force the companies to produce real things, not artifically flavoured substances causing just heath problems and not digestable by our bodies.

Sorry but you are wrong. Read falang07

My fasting experience and how light,  energetic and clear headed I was after day 8 led me into thinking why I felt good yet ate no food.

I come across descriptions of how the body fuels itself and ketones. This led me to read the original Atkins book. I practicesd eradicating all carbohydrates except fibre. I ate meat, dairy. Vegetables only. I sweetened with splendid. The first few months needed strong discipline but soon cravings for carbs went away,  flab drops and energy increases.

A lot of what I would type here can be found in the original Atkins book. You can probably download it free.

Read it and if some thing sounds confusing to you let me know.

I think it's easy to fail in an attempt to eat Atkins style.  I think my long  fasting experiences helped with discipline.  I recommend you complete several 8 day water fasts over several months first.

Don't be worried about never eating bread again.I think it's poison now.

Yes, choose a few of the lowest.  I measure my ketones with ketosis strips that I pee on.  If they change colour then I'm in ketosis.  If I've eaten too many high carb veg then I will know about it. Fruit is generally a no no, but luckily I like strawberries that are a low carb fruit.  So in moderation.  I aim for zero carb, because if I aimed for 40g then I'd end up with 100g, I recommend the strips. You need to know you are actually in ketosis, otherwise just wasting time and will continue to feel bad

Many thanks for your reply . Is it possible that you could give us an insight of your daily eating choices ? Also do you enjoy a beer or a wine ?

Finally is there a medical opinion on the Atkins diet ?

Wine. Too many carbs.  A glass would kick you out of ketosis I think but the next day you would get back in if stick to diet.

I sometimes drink a low carb beer.  Pure blonde brand in oz. If you are a heavy drinker changing to Atkins will be tough.  lower your alcohol intake considerably first. Vodka is a good choice for Atkins.  Breakfast bacon and eggs.  Or almond meal whey pancakes with Greek yoghurt or sour cream. Then I don't usually sit down for large meals.  I rather snack all through the day with chicken breasts beef jerky, boiled eggs, hard cheese,  pickled veg such as broccoli cauliflower. Konjac noodles. Protein shakes.  Atkins recipe a plenty on net.

Medical opinions seems split and varied. In my opinion, you don't need an opinion from a doctor to give Atkins a shot. Eating meat veg and dairy won't kill you quickly as long as you don't gorge on fat but use it as fuel for the day.

I would be careful about this diet. Moderation is the key to a healthy eating and living.
How about the cholesterol and purine levels in your blood from all the meat and protein?

Information about this is all in the original Atkins book.  Plus the cholesterol ideology has changed. Now it's considered there is good cholesterol and the bad cholesterol has now two types,  dense and fluffy.  I now no longer fear cholesterol concerns.
