Pattaya dusts off marine safety checks following Phuket boat tragedy

PATTAYA:-- Right on cue, Pattaya officials ordered renewed safety checks following the tragic sinking of two tourist boats in Phuket.

 

As happens after every serious marine accident nationwide, the Marine Department and municipal police checked licenses, boat seaworthiness and life-jacket use at Bali Hai Pier.

 

The checks follow the July 6 sinking of the Phoenix and Serenita in heavy seas between Koh Racha and Phuket’s Chalong Pier. Forty-five passengers – nearly all Chinese tourists – died and two remain missing.

 

Such accidents routinely are followed by much-ballyhooed “crackdowns” on marine safety in Pattaya and elsewhere. But the crackdowns are soon forgotten and then it becomes business as usual again until the next tourist dies.

 

Following the tried-and-true script, Pattaya officials ordered life guard and sea-rescue squads to remain vigilant, municipal police to check all boats leaving port, and Marine Department inspectors to check speedboat and ferry licenses.

So only and unless there's a tragedy with scores dying because of gross negligence, those safety checks will remain 'dusted and unused'?....Nice....

There have been numerous sinkings & collisions here in Pattaya, and officials swore they'd get on top of this and wouldn't happen again.

Were they lying to us? Shocking!

I wonder if they checked the gaggle of boats moored off of Pattaya Beach?

 

Wait, they can't be moored off of Pattaya Beach, the city banned that a few months ago.

 

Must have been hallucinating when I saw at least thirty boats moored off Pattaya Beach a couple of days ago.

The lifeguards near Klang are either chomping noodles or playing with their phones, sat under their gazebo, whenever I pass by. They can't see much of the beach from there.

They should be in a constant state of readiness like the lifeguards in Baywatch.

 

Thais might have hard time filling Baywatch swimsuits.

No let us be honest. Thais have a hard time working and being responsible for the safety of others. 

Another good photo shoot to try to convince the gullible...

true to Thai fashion give it 5 minutes... when the spot light goes away so will the B.S.

then business back to normal.. and another accident waiting to happen.

So correct Khun Paul  I was under the impression people had jobs at the harbor to make sure safety was carried out 12 months a year not when an accident happens  Look at these guys in the picture they look like they have been dragged off the streets given uniforms for a photo shoot. After all the crap like showing they are doing their jobs checking licenses lifejackets etc Then its back to normal laying around in hammocks playing cards  on mobile phone playing games etc This is just the way the Thai react to an accident its back to normal

What's happened to the usual rash of "taxi driver returns billions of dollars" stories?

Thailand does not have an exclusive on ignoring safety regulations and weather reports. This American captain headed out yesterday in stormy weather despite reports of incoming bad weather.

 

At least the tourists can have a refreshing glimpse of orange before drowning.

Was this in sight of soi 9 Police station?

I would imagine it was pretty darned DUSTY, when they got finished dusting off their long un-used marine safety plans.  Cough, cough....

All boats used for public transport are to have printed on both their sides the passenger capacity of the boat. 

This is presumably so the passengers can decide if the load is safe.

If you are in Pattaya please have a look and see if this has been done ?

I notice in Samui it is lacking...........................but no one cares !
