Suicide at Criminal Court identified as father of murder victim

A man jumped to his death on Monday morning from the eighth floor of a Bangkok Criminal Court building after seeing the suspect in his son’s murder acquitted.

 

Supachai Kanlahasunthorn came to the court at 9am to hear the verdict in the trial of a man accused of stabbing Supachai’s son to death in April 2016.

 

Supachai broke down in tears after the judge read the verdict acquitting the defendant at 10am.

 

Leaving the courtroom, he climbed through a hall window onto a terrace, over a wall, and then jumped to his death in the car park of court officials.

 

In the case, Supachai's son was stabbed to death on the night of April 15, 2016 on Prachasongkroh road in Bangkok’s Din Daeng district.

 

The court ruled that evidence and testimony from defence witnesses undermined the charges, while the prosecution lacked strong evidence.

 

After Supachai jumped, his sister-in-law rushed downstairs to see the body.

 

She broke into tears and had to be helped by officials into the court building to calm down. She claimed that her nephew did not receive justice, prompting her brother-in-law to commit suicide.

 

She said the murder incident should have been recorded on security cameras, but the owners claimed the cameras had broken down.

Wife says stress and disappointment with verdict led him to take his life

 

A FATHER jumped to his death from the eighth floor of the Criminal Court building in Bangkok yesterday after the sole defendant in the murder of his son was acquitted. 

 

Supachai Kanlahasunthorn, 52, broke into tears when the court announced it would give the benefit of the doubt to Nattapong Ngern-khiri. 

 

Nattapong had been charged with the fatal stabbing of Supachai’s son on Prachasongkroh Road in Bangkok’s Din Daeng district on April 15, 2016.

 

After leaving the courtroom at about 10am yesterday, Supachai climbed through a hall window onto a terrace on the eighth floor of the court building and jumped to his death in the court officials’ car park.

 

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Pol Lt-General Chanthep Sesavej said Supachai’s wife told him that stress and disappointment had led to the suicide. 

 

The man’s sister-in-law rushed downstairs and found the body. She said her slain nephew had not received justice, prompting her sister’s husband to commit suicide. 

 

The Criminal Court acquitted Nattapong yesterday after a key witness to the crime was unable to testify due to ongoing psychiatric treatment. 

 

During police interrogation, the witness said he saw what happened but he failed to show up in court. 

 

“Other pieces of evidence are not solid enough. Recordings from CCTV did not show the stabbing. They show only what happened at the mouth of the soi where the crime occurred,” Court of Justice spokesman Suriyan Hongwilai said. 

 

He said it was the duty of judges to rule based on evidence, free from pressure and prejudices. 

 

“But the verdict is still from the court of primary instance. Plaintiffs can still appeal,” Suriyan said. 

 

Chanthep said he would look into the investigation report that was compiled by the Din Daeng police station. 

 

“I will check whether it contains any flaw and whether it can be improved,” he said.

Now it's a double tragedy!.....I only hope the judge got the decision right or this defendant gets a chance to inflict

more pain.....

Why kill himself over this , yes the murder was a tragedy , but too many mental cases in Thailand, who needs psychiatric help, was the father offered such help? I doubt it. .

A man jumped to his death this morning from the 8th floor of the Criminal Court on Rajadapisek Road after the court acquitted the defendant accused of stabbing his son to death, police said.

 

The incident occurred at about 10.15am when Supachai Kanhasunthorn, about 40, walked out of a courtroom to the front walkway, climbed up a window and jumped to the ground.

 

He fell on the car park for court officials and died from severe head injuries.

BANGKOK — After the man he believed killed his son walked free Monday, a distraught father jumped from the eighth floor of the Criminal Court to his death.

 

Police were called at about 9am to the scene at the court building on Ratchadaphisek Road where Supachai Kanlahasuntorn, 45, leaped to his death minutes after Nattapong Ngeonkeeree was acquitted was found not guilty of murdering his son.

One can only imagine the grief this poor man felt when his son was murdered, to then be crushed again by watching his murderer walk free.

it's tragic but killing yourself just made it more of a glory for the defendant if he was guilty.

Typical loss of face nonsense. If the court of public opinion handed out guilty convictions then EVERY one would be guilty. Respect the law and especially a little matter called evidence.

I seriously doubt he would require or desire your sympathy. 

Justice has not only got to be done. It has to be seen to be done. On the face of it, it does not seem so in this case. RIP

Because friends or family of Nattapong Ngern-khiri might then take counter-revenge against loved ones.

Really? This is a developing nation. Its only had a few decades on that path. You critique it here because their social health safety net doesn't equal your high expectations. Time to book a one way ticket home. Imo

if he was not a murderer - the desperate father would not kill himself. seems like he was very sure who killed his son. better kill this murdered and face trial then kill yourself. if i were him I would do exactly this.

I reckon the fact that his son was stabbed to death might have aided his suicide 

 

defendant guilty or not seeing your son  like that is very very hard

He was heart broken, you idiot.  No it's not the first thing on someones mind when tragedy occurs but he obviously was completely devastated.  Do you have children?  He couldn't live without his child.  We aren't robots......there was a better way but the pain was too much for him.  RESPECT.  Rest in peace for both.
