Eleven prison wardens sacked amid drugs, embezzlement charges

The Corrections Department has dismissed 11 prison wardens found guilty of serious misconduct, eight of them losing their jobs without pensions or benefits.

Of the three “retired” with pensions, two were found to have been absent from work for 15 consecutive days and the other had let an inmate receive a package from a relative that contained a SIM card for a cell phone.

The more serious charges against the other eight include smuggling in opioid pain relief medication for inmates, peddling a large quantity of cough medicine, being middlemen in drug deals, cooking the books to pocket extra cash and absconding with inmates’ earnings.

Others abetted the smuggling of phones inside, failed to report the discovery of phones to spare inmates punishment, and rented prison property without departmental permission.

Department chief Pol Col Narat Sawetanan said on Wednesday its civil service sub-commission endorsed the dismissals at a meeting this week.

Narat said the department was emphatic about its officials strictly following rules, but some continued to engage in wrongdoing.

The “heavy” punitive action was intended to deter others from doing likewise and to shore up public confidence in the department’s integrity.

Has it changed? I thought it was a requirement.

We'll soon need a prison just for ex-prison wardens. The obvious conundrum with that is of course who to appoint as warden. Who has enough integrity not to con the ex-warden inmates, peddle drugs to them or fiddle with the accounting books?

Basically it cannot do either...

Really, it's kind of pathetic that this sentence is even used. Rotten to the core...the lot of them.

Codeine and perhaps morphine. But where did they get it from? A drug bust, perhaps?

These guys take great care of their customers and make sure that they receive better drugs than the outside world. Outstanding.

Opiods are fairly hard to get but not impossible

You just need to convince a Dr  at a real hospital and they don't give them out like candy

Chronic back pain etc usually works, depending on age etc

Go to prison in Thailand and still get scammed.

What a moral-less country Thailand has become.

What an irony for the prisoners, being locked up by crims and scam artists.

Instead of being totally negative here we should acknowledge one positive.  Not inactive posts, but  eight of them losing their jobs without pensions or benefits. Shock horror! Some of them probably should have seen criminal charges, but this is a big step in the right direction.

i assumed this has being going for decades.they all part of the tea money  that people in postions of power will do

And you think UK,  US AUS AND Canadian prisons are any different

Eleven wardens out of 144 prisons......nearly 10 %........Guess it is as good a start as any.......

Only 11, shocking.

I made a mistake once in Thailand and ended up behind bars. But, I learned my lesson and I can say with 100% certainty, that it will not happen again.

To squash rumors running rampart and conspiracy theorists, I will explain my mistake once in order to help others avoid the embarrassment of ending up behind bars. My poor decision made in the spur of the moment changed my life. I had simply agreed to participate in a photo shoot at a museum in Nan Province.  I thought that I was there to hold the lights. Little did I know. Never again will I allow myself to travel down that path again. Lesson learned.

They broke the law!!!!

No prison sentences?

No death penalties?

Becoming a monk would be the easiest and probably obvious 'get out of jail' card.

It's part of the recently announced "Happy Bin" campaign. Phase two: free the inmates leave the guards.

the one with the most money always gets the job.

What's an unreal hospital then?

I guess what they did is not against the law, as no criminal charges brought again

Is loss of face penalty enough?

It's one where you dream they will look after you properly.

I think they are referring to Tramadol. Ten for 50 Baht at most pharmacies.
