WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump praised Italy's increasingly hard-line approach to immigration on Monday, at the start of a meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte at the White House.

"I agree very much with what you are doing with respect to migration, and illegal immigration, and even legal immigration," Trump told Conte in the Oval Office. "He has taken a very firm stance on the border, a stance that few countries have taken. And frankly he is doing the right thing in my opinion."

Conte took office last month promising to bring radical change to Italy, including more generous welfare provision and a crackdown on immigration.

Immigration was a major election issue after an influx of hundreds of thousands of mostly African asylum seekers. Italy has seen more than 650,000 migrants reach its shores since 2014.

Conte has said his government would end "the immigration business."

The new Italian government is looking to limit the number of migrants it lets into the country and has shut its ports to humanitarian rescue ships, saying it is bearing an unfair burden within the European Union for dealing with asylum seekers.

...and I guess, it is up to you and your ilk to decide, who is "hard working" and "dross", right!?

God help us!

It's up to the people who are citizens of the country to which the would-be "immigrants" want to enter. Immigration should be for the benefit of citizens, not immigrants. Otherwise, yes, you get a lot of unproductive, violence-prone, welfare claiming "dross."

Funny- I was always of the impression, that immigration should and could benefit both sides!

But - of course- you are right: "we" (eg Western Countries) should be the ones benifitting!

...again!

Since (mostly) we already laid the groundwork to turn people into immigrants, with exploiting their countries or placing "our" leaders, thus destabilizing "their" countries- so why not have a win/win for us and a big sack of nothing for them!

Mexicans coming into the USA are coming from a country with the 15th largest GDP in the world, ahead of the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Norway, Sweden, and Austria. Explain again why they deserve special access.

...and since they are absolutely the only ones that are coming into the US...

...and since they are absolutely not coming into the EU (which the "Italy" in this case, is still a part of...)

...explain again, what you are talking about?!

Trump's immigration ideas are depressing. He outsources everything he produces but would not want those workers in America, even though they take no jobs that most Americans would want. He even outsourced his WIFE. Melania is certainly a beautiful woman but those are plentiful in the USA. His demonization of immigrants is very familiar to many of us here in Thailand. "It's all THEIR fault."

Because what is coming into Italy is actually WORSE than that coming into the US from Mexico.

Okay...I'll bite: worse by who's standards?

Yours?

Then please explain your "standards"!

Doctor from India- good?

"unskilled worker" from Sudan- bad?

felix italy, they even had 108 illegal migrants returned to tripoli.fortress europe is taking shape against illegal asyltourism the alliance with italy, austria, visegrad states, denmark, sweden, belgium, netherlands, norway, finland gets stronger every day. spains socialist government with minority rule will falter soon as it lost already a mayor parliament vote thus ending the illegal migration via strait of gibralta or ceuta.
