When crime buster extraordinary Surachet Hakpal came knocking on the door of a house in Prawet, Bangkok, there was a panic inside.

As officers burst through the door ten Malaysians tried to flee the scene - but they were surrounded and all were arrested.

The Malaysians were running a call center operation preying on victims in their homeland using new tech methods to extort money.

Maj Gen Surachet - affectionately known as Big Joke in the media - said that this raid was a joint operation with Thai tech cops and Malaysian police.

The gang rented house number 142 in Moo 9 of Dok Mai district, Prawet. They had rented the two story detached property for 90,000 baht a month for the last four months.

They were in the process of packing up and moving to a new location when information received led to the raid.

The website of the Tourist Police Bureau - of which Surachet is deputy commissioner - said that those behind the call center were Malaysian and Taiwanese.

Their communication modus operandi has now moved up a gear ditching VOIP (voice over internet protocol) in favor of using pocket wi-fi technology to avoid detection.

Pictures on the TPB site showed a lot of electronic and other material taken into evidence.

When does this guy sleep ?  He is omnipresent it seems....he has done more to fight crime in Thailand than entire squads or committees. Hope he gets the big promotion soon...he has certainly earned it.

He isn't the only one doing the job. They are giving him the credit because some people want him to be the next police force head. It's as simple as that. It's called free advertising. Be smarter than the news. Don't always believe in  it.

All were arrested. huh! Well, well, well. But then they were foreigners, and obviously not "connected". In years gone by, a common theme of any such bust was the number of people who managed to flee despite a massive number of officers surrounding ... whatever. A standing joke. It was a feature of illegal casino busts (numerous such stories in Bangkok involving casinos run by police-connected jao pho) as well as ambushes of drug caravans in the north and of insurgents in the south. Still, at least some scum have been caught.
