Abhisit denies defection rumours

Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva has dismissed speculation that at least a dozen former MPs from his party are going to join a new political group that is pro-junta.

Abhisit said on Friday that he has been aware of an ongoing attempt by the Sam Mit (Three Friends) group to woo Democrat politicians.

However, he has not heard of any current Democrat politician going to join Sam Mit, Abhisit said.

Sam Mit is led by veteran politicians Suriya Juengrungruangkit and Somsak Thepsuthin. They are linked to the newly formed Palang Pracharat Party, which plans to nominate the junta leader, General Prayut Chan-o-cha, as its prime ministerial candidate in the next election.

Abhisit said on Friday Surasit Trithong, a former Democrat MP, was reportedly joining Sam Mit, resigned from the party in 2011. Some other Democrat politicians have dismissed reports of their defections, according to the Democrat leader.

Abhisit said he was confident all the current Democrat politicians have made their decisions to remain with the party.

“We at the Democrat Party agree that it’s best to stick to our ideology. It’s not sustainable to focus on immediate benefits offered, such as money or political positions,” he said.

Abhisit said political parties have the right to woo former MPs from other parties if they use a legitimate method. He called on politicians to build faith among the public in order to keep the country’s democracy sustainable.

In response to possible numbers game after the next election, Abhisit said: “We hope voters will give the answer on the election day.”

The Democrat leader, however, confirmed reports that some of the party’s ex-MPs in the deep south were going to join Action Coalition for Thailand Party, a new party co-founded by former Democrat secretary-general Suthep Thaugsuban. But Abhisit added that his party would not have any problem finding election candidates to replace defecting former MPs.

Democrat politicians gathered at the party’s headquarters on Friday to mark Abhisit’s 54th birthday. They included party seniors like former Democrat leader Chuan Leekpai, former deputy leader Marut Bunnag and current secretary general Juti Krairiksh.

Politicians from other political parties also joined the event with bouquets of flowers.

Suthep did not attend the birthday party but he sent flowers.

That's settled then. The plan is to clamour for a coup after losing elections.

Standard in LOD...……..Land of Denial.

"...Suthep did not attend the birthday party but he sent flowers..."

Er... Ahem... Oh... Er...

Nation, let me help with your English language skills; the flowers Suthep sent are called a 'funeral wreath'.

Denial of the truth once again

It's Abhisit to a tee!

I just don't get why anyone is talking elections, with 6 months left to February, it's highly unlikely an election will be held in 2019.

Wake up thailand.

Notable absence in the group photo is Sathit Wongnontoey, a Dem incumbent. Not too sure about the rest of the 7 Dem who were leaders of the PDRC. Have they defected to Muan Maha or ACT? Looks like Chitpaz staying with the Dem.

This is the hope...but will they be able to see through the fog being created in the political circus currently?

What about a surprise election, the surprise being that only "right people" new the date and turned up to vote therefore it was a landslide on a low turnout. The main manifesto pledge being the introduction of a 75 bt lottery every week.

As he has aged and packed on the kilos, our plump friend Khun Abhisit must wonder if he will ever  be appointed as PM again and to be "important". After all, this is a man who never really had a job or who has had much interaction with the people or the workers. What can he do, other than collect public monies as a "public servant"? IMO he is a weak and self centered man who will pick whatever  strategy will bring him political power.

Meanwhile, Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit is at work building consensus, a political team, being a good father to his 3 kids, and of course just being awesome.

I expect that the reaction from one of the the coolest guys in Thailand when he sees the  article on Abhisit, will be something like this;

"See ya laterz Mark, good luck in your new job as errand boy."

While it would not surprise me to see many veteran Dems support a military PM, it would certainly expose their true colours. Nothing 'democratic' about it!
