A former Coventry firefighter who was instrumental in in rescuing 12 boys and their football coach from a flooded cave in Thailand is to be honoured by his home city.

Rick Stanton was the first person to reach the missing boys stranded in the flooded Tham Luang cave last month.

He will now receive the prestigious Coventry Award of Merit, which recognises the 'highest ideals of citizenship or outstanding performance in any worthy field of human endeavour.'

People who have previously received the award include Sir Frank Whittle, inventor of the jet engine and Sir Basil Spence, architect and designer of the ‘new’ Coventry Cathedral.

Well done he certainly deserves it.

A modest man, a modest hero.

He deserves something in the new years honours as well.

That is the British part, and well deserved.

What about Thailand?

Firefighters are indisputably among the people I respect the most!

Reminds us that the British value all people of the world and honor those who contribute to others well being regardless of where they are born or live. Well done!

They need to come up with something significant for the Queen to award the Brit divers. Bring in the other Commonwealth contributors too. This was an effort of epic proportions  and has to be honored as such.

You are a TRUE hero mate.  Thank you.

Well done, Sir.

and all involved

There won't be any honours left for him, after the England football team are all Knighted for getting into the semi final ?

Well done, he acknowledge this telling the kids  "we the first "

I salute all especially the Coach who kept them alive, Thai Navy Seal who gave his life so that they could Live.."Logistics" Americans who ran the operation, the 5 American and 5 Thai Navy seals out of Thirteen  Seals who did the Rescue and joint effort by all , Local Thai & International support , Much Respect

Yeah, whatever Ringo Starr got, Rick Stanton deserves two.

Great news and i am sure there will be some more coming from the big house later in the year.

Well its very nice to hear that, as all you hear in LOS,  is that it was all about the Navy Seals.  We all know it was the Brits and Aussies who did the  real job, but they don't get any mention in any of the reports I have seen locally in Thailand.  Why is that, arrogance or ignorance?

Most people don't think that until they need one
