BANGKOK, 3rd August 2018 (NNT) – Energy Minister Siri Jiraphongphan said the partial collapse of a dam under Xe Pian-Xe Namnoy hydropower project in Laos’s Attapeu province will not affect Thailand’s power security.

He said that since the incident which caused massive flooding of villages in the Sanamxay district, the government of Laos has not notified Thailand whether the commercial operation date, initially set for February 2019, will be delayed.

The project is initially set to supply 354 megawatts of electricity from Pakse to Ubon Ratchathani starting in that month.

He confirmed that whether the supply of power from the project will be delayed or not, Thailand’s electricity security will remain intact.

Another denial of the implications of a disaster, just as they recently did with the Phoenix disaster.

I would doubt that very much. There  may not be a problem at present but I imagine it will have a big impact on PM Prayut's dreams for the future with his much vaunted Eastern Economic Corridor. This involves the new U-Tapao aircraft maintenance facility, HS rail systems, ports development, robotics development, double track railways, a new Eastern medical hub, next generation electric vehicles, etc. etc.

Then there is his latest fantasy the Southern Economic Corridor.

These two ventures would rely heavily on foreign investment and will need a large and reliable source of energy to attract them. Without a strong guarantees of energy supply any potential investors might just shy away and his dreams could end in tears. Energy supply is vital.
