doesn't change the fact that she is a Thai citizen.

 

If she were not Thai, how on earth could the Junta guys ask to have her extradited?

Never quite sure why these stories show up in 'news', probably better in the 'Jokes & Entertainment' section.

We all know it's not going to happen, the Junta (or insert regime du jour) make these announcements, it's plays to some domestic audience that they are trying to placate, knowing full well it's basically a fun newspaper piece for a day or two.

Like many things Thai it's just the pronouncement of the day, like yet another traffic law or yet another 'hub' story, and net result, absolutely nothing!

Yingluck who ?   She is not on our list of fugitives.   Come to think of it, we are not looking for any fugitives from Taiwan.  Sorry.

Her case has been to court, she is sentenced to jail.

She left the country.

It is well established that the UK gave her a visa, and that she is there every now and then.

 

Not asking for extradition would have been mega weird.

It is bizarre because the junta let her go and now try to put on a show that they are 'trying' to get her extradited. It is actually more humorous than bizarre.

 Verdicts handed down by banana republics headed by a junta are not usually pondered in more independent, cultivated circles of law.   Though, you are correct, they would have to ask even after getting a rebuff from Interpol.   There is the whole escape as Eric mentioned as well raises eyebrows.  The UK is just acting like most on this forum would:  Have not seen her, do not know where she is, don't care where she is.

Nor will it ever go anywhere.  They should simply drop it because the West is simply going to make those who seek her arrest look like fools.  Implicitly they are being told that the West does not consider their request to be legitimate because the regime is not perceived as legitimate by foreign democracies.  They should take a hint.

Thai officials have no authority in Hong Kong (China) without permission of the Hong Kong (Chinese) authorities.

Well, quite easy to understand...if she does not travel with a Thai passport, she is not Thai wherever she goes with her Cyprus, UAE or Montenegro passport. She is a citizen of Cyprus, UAE or Montenegro.  And in that case, whatever her roots are, how can the government of Thailand ask for the extradition of a Cyprus, UAE or Montenegro citizen?  Oh yes, they can, but everybody knows what the outcome will be.

Well, I am not mixing no nothing.  You just ask any immigration officer... Yes, she is a Thai citizen. But for the Thais only... Wherever she will go with another passport, she will have the "nationality" of the country of the passport she travels with.

Seems all they accomplished was to get Taksin in the headlines again. ?

Well, of course, they can. The country in whose jurisdiction a crime has been committed, or who have convicted a perpetrator who has subsequently absconded, are completely entitled to apply for extradition, regardless of the nationality (or passports) held by said perpetrator.

 

The stumbling block here is rather more the nature of the "crime", the nature of the regime which tried and convicted this alleged perpetrator and the nature of the way in which she was allowed/assisted to abscond.
