Bangkok fire injures three at Khlong Thom Centre

Featured Replies

A major fire broke out at Khlong Thom Centre on Worachak Road in Bangkok on 28 August, injuring three emergency responders as firefighters worked to prevent the blaze spreading to neighbouring buildings.

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt arrived at the scene at about 10pm, where Surachai Rawiwann, director of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration's Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, briefed him on the firefighting operation.

Rama 199, Bangkok's emergency radio centre, reported at 10.00pm that the fire had engulfed the Khlong Thom Centre building but had not spread to adjacent properties. Firefighters had contained the risk of flames spreading on the side facing Chao Khamrop Road.

Building begins to collapse

The operation was complicated by large quantities of combustible materials inside the building, including plastic goods, gas shops and electronic equipment.

At 10.16pm, Rama 199 said the building had begun to collapse, while crews continued efforts to stop the fire from extending further.

By 10.41pm, three people had been reported injured: a volunteer, a firefighter from Suan Mali station and a firefighter from Samsen station. All received first aid and were taken to Klang Hospital.

Jatuporn Buruspat, the deputy interior minister, and Theeraphat Kachamat, director-general of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, also attended the scene to monitor the response.

Jatuporn said machinery, equipment, volunteers and Bangkok officials had been mobilised to control the fire. Scene assessments indicated crews had brought the main fire under control, although firefighters were still tackling hot spots in areas that were difficult to reach.

Asked about casualties and fatalities, Jatuporn said he had not yet received a full report, apart from minor injuries to personnel. He also said he had not received confirmation of reports that the fire began on the building's fourth floor, adding that evidence would need to be examined and an investigation will be carried out, once the area is declared safe.

Emergency will remain at the scene throughout the night, ensuring that the fire is fully extinguished.
