(Reuters) - Deputies who raided a squalid compound surrounded by tires and an earthen berm in rural New Mexico have arrested two men and taken 11 children into protective custody for their own health and safety, the sheriff said.

Three women believed to be the children's mothers also were detained during last week's sweep, which followed a two-month investigation by authorities in New Mexico and Georgia as well as the FBI, Taos County Sheriff Jerry Hogrefe said in a statement on the department's Facebook page.

Hogrefe said in the statement that Siraj Wahhaj, 39, was taken into custody on a warrant accusing him of abducting his 3-year-old son. Lucan Morton was arrested on suspicion of harbouring a fugitive.

The missing boy was not found at the compound outside the unincorporated community of Amalia, New Mexico, near the Colorado state line, Hogrefe said, but "it is reasonably believed he was there a few weeks ago."

Hogrefe said Wahhaj was armed with an AR15-style rifle and four loaded pistols when he was taken into custody. It was not immediately clear if the two suspects, who are both from Clayton County, Georgia, had retained criminal defence attorneys.

The sheriff said the compound was made up of a small travel trailer buried in the ground and covered with a tarp, providing no running water, plumbing or electricity.

"The only food we saw were a few potatoes and a box of rice in the filthy trailer," Hogrefe said. "But what was most surprising, and heartbreaking was when the team located a total of five adults and 11 children that looked like third world country refugees not only with no food or fresh water, but with no shoes, personal hygiene and basically dirty rags for clothing."

AMALIA, N.M. (AP) — Searchers found the remains of a boy after raiding a makeshift compound last week in search of a missing Georgia child, authorities said Tuesday.

The remains were found Monday during a search in Amalia, near the Colorado border. Taos County Sheriff Jerry Hogrefe said. Authorities were awaiting positive identification of the remains.

These arrested cretins were illegal MUSLIM immigrants as well. But hey, according to Democrats, they have rights too. Poor devils, all they needed was a good house, welfare, food stamps and they could have taken good care of those children. Right?

They also claimed they were the parents. EXACTLY why Trump had ICE separated children from immigrants until proven to be kin. But once again, Democrats know best and want to keep children with these degenerate dogs.

Sad

Where does it say they were in the USA illegally?

They appear to be have been squatting on another’s land, but I’m not sure how the Democratic Party can be held responsible for that.

Amazing a left wing report without mentioning once they were all MUSLIMS

Liberals should actually watch some real news once in a while to get the real truth instead of the fake news designed to keep them in the dar on whats really going on.

Do you figure that their immigration/residence status got missed during the investigation?

Surely that would've been checked pretty early on?

And the authorities would have been on them like a shot?

The group had been on the radar for even longer as there had been previous issues with its encroachment on land.....see link in post #2.

A link in which there is absolutely no mention of them being "illegal immigrants".

I suppose they might have been Christians, but considering their names I would think that anyone of average intelligence would assume that they were probably Muslim.

And not Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist, Zoroastrianist, Taoist, Sikhs or Jains.

Would you have been just as upset to find out that they were Jains and the wicked Liberal press had not mentioned it?

Jainism - Wikipedia

Or do you require every press report to state the religion of the individuals reported upon?
