Mu Pa citizenship approval explained

The Interior Ministry on Thursday clarified the reasons why three Mu Pa footballers and their assistant coach were granted Thai citizenship.

Venus Srisuk, director of Bureau Registration Administration said that Mongkol Boonpium and Pornchai Khamluang became Thai citizens because their migrant parents have lived in Thailand more than 15 years.

Regarding the approval for Adul Samon, 14, Venus pointed to the Cabinet’s December 7, 2016 resolution, which declared that stateless children were eligible for citizenship if they were abandoned by parents and had remained and studied in Thailand for not less than 10 years.

Adul met this requirement and so his right to become a Thai citizen was recognised in a ceremony on Wednesday. He was the boy who conversed in English with a pair of British divers who found him and 12 others in Tham Luang cave on July 2, 10 days after they went missing. A video clip of the discovery and the conversation shot by the divers brought relief to the boys’ families and people around the world who were closely following the rescue operation.

Ekkapol Chantawong, the assistant coach, was born on Thai soil and one of his parents had previously been granted Thai citizenship. He was therefore eligible for citizenship.

The clarification from Venus came as the Interior Ministry was criticised by some, who accused it of showing favouritism to the Mu Pa boys despite a backlog of over 400,000 stateless people who have applied for Thai citizenship.

No! Because Hollywood will pay the required 35,000 baht to get him off the recruits registration list.

Are you forgetting this is Thailand?

Maybe they should explain why all those legal right to citizenship didn't apply prior to the cave rescue becoming big news, and why now at once all this can be cleared in a few weeks.

Sorry, it looks like the lime light drove this more than anything.  They should have processed some of the 400K still waiting.  This, though good news and justice for the boys, looks dubious.   It looks like doing the right thing for the wrong reasons.

The clarification from Venus

More evidence that all non Thais are considered aliens...

The explanation is quite simple.

Somebody very big at the very top said "make them citizens."

Amazing what can happen when the world is watching, an admission to what we already know.

In spite of all the talk about Thai is different and the Farang don't understand, they themselves know and understand their commitment to social justice is minimal and their commitment to greed and injustice is excessive.

We need to keep an eye on this lot.

Let me help with the explanation: there is so much press about them, that it makes some people look really good, if they help this case along!

That is the ONE AND ONLY reason!

What about all the other stateless people who meet the same criteria, but weren't trapped in a cave?

Instead these other stateless people are trapped inside the dark, gaping maw of Thai bureaucracy and apathy.  There are no 'foreign cave divers' to rescue these people.

So essentially all of them were eligible under current regulations for Thai Citizenship. How many other stateless are out there who are eligible but the systems are not adequate or efficient enough to process them.

Absolutely.

There's now going to be a spate of daring activities akin to caving by some of the 400,000 others who see an easy and fast path to citizenship (and maybe fame).

Removed an incomprehensible post.

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place
