BMA to legalize vending on footpaths of Khao San road

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration has decided to allow vendors to sell their merchandises on the footpaths of Khao San road between 4pm-midnight, said Bangkok deputy governor Sakolthee Pattiyakul today.

 

Mr Sakolthee said the decision was made at  a meeting between the BMA and representatives of the Sports and Tourism Ministry, Commerce Ministry, Metropolitan Police Bureau and other agencies concerned.

 

It was agreed at the meeting that vending on the sidewalks of Khao San road will be legalised under Section 20 of the law on public hygiene and order which empowers the BMA to designate areas for vending.

Well.. a bit of a compromise.. but the street should be a 'walking street'.. no cars.. period.. it isn't as if it is an important thoroughfare.. traffic has been going around it for years..

Agreement was also made about the distribution of proceeds from tea money envelopes, which was the ultimate cause for the decision to disrupt the merchant vendors.

A new regulation from the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) will allow street stalls on Khaosan Road to stay open from 4pm till midnight, Bangkok deputy governor Sakoltee Phattiyakul said after a meeting with related agencies yesterday.

 

The regulation will allow street stalls to operate on Rambutri, Chakrabongs, Krai Sri, Sip Sam Hang and Tani roads in Banglamphu area.

 

Over the next 10 days, Phra Nakhon district will also collect opinions from street vendors and building owners. 

 

“Every vendor has to register with the Commerce Ministry. We will make it legal and transparent,” Sakoltee said.

 

“We are trying to find a middle ground for everyone. The street vendors can’t have everything. They can’t expect to use public footpaths all day long,” Sakoltee said, adding that vendors will only be allowed a space of 1.5 square metres and all stalls need to be of the same size. 

 

“We will ensure that everybody gets an equal share of the footpath, and only one stall will be allowed per vendor,” Sakoltee explained. 

 

Bangkok officials have previously claimed that some vendors own as many as seven stalls. 

 

“The officials don’t understand the situation in Khaosan. Many vendors do their trade during the day. They should consider those making a living during the day time too,” Yada Pornoetrumpa, president of Khaosan Road Street Vendors Association, said.

 

“Ideally, I would want Khaosan Road to stay open 24 hours. They think vendors are greedy, but actually stalls help look after the street’s cleanliness,” Yada added.

So essentially he's only conceded around 2 hours from his original ban. Hardly much of a concession to a senseless ban. It's all about saving face now. I have no idea how these time zones makes the area 'safer' .... why not just pedestrianize the zone? 

 

Hopefully, they relax the rules a little in the evenings around other major tourists areas and allow some street food, markets on Sukhumvit and Siam, instead of a horrid ban that is destroying the character of the city. 

 

Failure to do that, and the sanitization and sensless destruction to the city continues. A city that has mass tourism appeal, not for the non existant tourist attractions but it's culture, character, urban life, street food, markets, etc - the BMA should be regulating, organising rather than senseless bans that destroy the whole reason why tourists come to the country.

So the regular envelope payments have been transferred from the RTP to another set of grasping hands within the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration.

Clever fellows these BMA boys. The RTP are not going to be happy about this.

Free people are moral and don't do harm !

Slaves need regulations and need to "register" everything [from registrare = give ownership to the king]

 

... fools need other slaves to follow the rules that enslave them because they cannot stand the idea of being responsible by themselves.

"The RTP are not going to be happy about this". No problem, they will just set up more tea money traffic stops.

would be no problems if pedestrians could actually move freely on the footpaths but these sellers take up both sides of it and leave bugger all room to walk through, to get 50 metres takes 20 minutes as you have to stop constantly due to the walking area is only wide enough for 1 person at a time. Them you have all the refuse/blood & guts from the stalls stinking up the street, it can be pretty bad. Maybe if the sellers left a lot more room and cleaned up after themselves their wouldnt be so many complaints, yes it does add to the character but it also inconveniences many people as they are taking up the spaces designed for them to walk on. Big difference between doing it right and not giving a sh*t, hopefully it can be fixed

Yes. You have a very valid point.

But this is Thailand. Lawlessness abounds. It could not / will not succeed.

For someone whose been in Thailand for so long, what on earth are you doing on Khao San Road then whinging about vendors? It's like going to Las Vegas and saying 'dude there are too many casinos here, they need banning'. WHAT ARE YOU DOING THERE IN THE FIRST PLACE?

I like Tea... Much better than coffee

i thought the reason for closing it down was because the emergency services could could not get through so how has it helped them.

All emergencies have now been scheduled for the morning hours, and no later than 3pm.
