BANGKOK, 10 August 2018 (NNT) – The Royal Irrigation Department has unveiled water management and flooding response plans for this year, saying the situation will not be as severe as in 2011.

RID Director-General Thongplew Kongjun revealed the department's water management and flood response plans for this year that the department will focus on the inspection into the structural integrity of its 437 dams, and 1,806 flood control buildings.

The RID will be allocating equipment to flood risk areas in order to enable swift responses to flooding, as well as removing obstructing items from canals and rivers, making projections of water volume in reserviours, and creating analysis for flood risk areas.

Touching on the water management, the RID has put operation plans in place which include the cultivation plan during rainy season, adjustments to the cultivation cycle in 13 lowland areas in Chao Phraya River Basin to allow for water retention, forecasting and analyzing by Smart Water Operation Center and its regional offices, the management of water in reservoirs to remain below the rule curve, the usage of lowlands for water retention, flow management in Moon and Chi rivers, and communications with the general public.

The RID chief assured that the management of water in reservoirs will go according to plan, making the flooding situation throughout this year not as severe as in 2011.

Eight reservoirs are currently holding water at an alarming level, namely Nam Pung, Lam Pao, Chulabhorn, Ubolratana, Vajiralongkorn, and Pran Buri reservoirs, while the water volume in Nam Un and Kaeng Krachan reservoirs is now at 103 percent the dam's capacity.

Warnings of flash floods and landslides have been issued for Sakhon Nakhon, Mukdahan, Prachin Buri, Trat, Chanthaburi, Ranong, Phang Nga, and Surat Thani.

Tomorrow's headline: RID says flooding this year will be worst this century.

Entirely based on the government saying no flooding in Phetchaburi, followed the next day by announcing flood evacuation plans.

the fat lady comes to mind - wait until she sings

It will only be severe if it's your house.

They should know, 'eh?  :clap2:
FYI. The heavy flooding in 2011 didn't start until Oct - Nov of that year.  We're not even close to the time of year when the monsoons bring the heaviest rainfall

Lets delete the highlighted words above then it will be a more accurate post!

Get the boats out, spin those propellers and make the bad river take the flood out to sea.

obviously that didn't work for 8 reservoirs so far ....

There is nothing he can win by saying this, and everything he can lose.

Why are Thai officials so dumb?

The 2011 flooding was at it's worst in Sept/Oct if I remember.

Considering the long range weather forecast is rain almost everyday here in the north for the foreseeable future then the optimism may well come back and bite bums hard.

A wake board boat, shallow v bottom, would be deadly.

I bet I see this next year. Anyone hiring wake boards out next year remember it was my idea. You will have to send me 15%. PM and I will give details where I want my bitcoins sent.

Perhaps they've already spoken to a fortune teller about it? As long as it wasn't the same one the PM used to say there would be no flooding in Phetchaburi.

I believe them. It'll not as severe, it'll be worse. It's a given after the huge el nino we had before.
