BANGKOK — A transparency activist filed a complaint Tuesday against city officials for cutting down a 50-year-old tree partly on public property.

Srisuwan Janya went to the Administrative Court over Saturday’s downing of the rain tree, or Chamchuri tree, on Thetsaban Songkhro Road in the Chatuchak district. He was accompanied by Prachaniwet neighborhood residents who were fans of the five-story tree.

Srisuwan Janya, president of the Stop Global Warming Association, on Tuesday lodges a complaint with the Central Administrative Court against Bangkok Governor Pol General Aswin Kwanmuang and the director of the Chutuchak District Office, after the city cut down a big rain tree that was more than 50 years old on Saturday.

Srisuwan demanded in his petition that officials replace the fallen tree with 100 Chamchuri trees at least 30 centimeters in diameter in the area. The tree partially blocked a footpath.

I find some charm in natural obstacles in Bangkok footpaths. There are near entire roads without and footpath, or a footpath impeded by man made obstacles (including in poor state due to lack of maintenance). These should be addressed first. For a natural obstacle like this tree the test should be whether it creates an unacceptable safety hazard or unsustainable damage to infrastructure (e.g cables, pipes, etc). It is often shocking to see the loss of green coverage where a tree or trees once stood, and something that can take a long time to accept and even longer to remedy.

Just surprised they managed to bring it down without destroying anything else in the vicinity, unlike a friend of mine who had a large coconut palm dropping coconuts on and near his garden pergola,he got a half assed crew in,they cut it and had rope to pull it away, result,it came down crushing his pergola to matchwood, they just shrugged,he was stunned when they still wanted paying,so he wrote their quote down, and deducted the cost of the pergola, needless to say when he gave them this they high tailed it never to be seen again.
