Bebinca set to bring heavy downpours

Authorities get ready for onslaught; keep close watch on brimming dams.

TROPICAL STORM “Bebinca” has emerged as the latest threat to Thailand, as it is expected to bring heavy downpours to many parts of the country until tomorrow.

“With this storm hovering in Vietnam between August 15 and 16 [today and tomorrow], rainfall will also rise in Thailand. Dams and main rivers in the country’s North, Upper Northeast and the East will have to deal with a bigger water volume,” Somkiat Prajamwong, secretary-general of the Office of the National Water Resources (ONWR), said yesterday.

On August 2, the government created a war room to address Thailand’s flood situation, and representatives from relevant authorities have since been working on analysing data and integrating water management.

“We will issue one update daily when the water situation is normal, but updates will be issued every three hours for overwhelmed reservoirs,” Somkiat explained yesterday, adding that constant updates will help people take timely action.

Heavy downpours, after all, come with the risk of flash floods, inundation and landslides, and in serious cases, these disasters do not just cause damage but also claim lives. Late last month, several people died in Nan province due to rain-induced landslides.

As of press time, three major dams – Kaeng Krachan in Phetchaburi province, Nam Oun in Sakon Nakhon and Vajiralonglorn in Kanchanaburi province – were being closely monitored. The Kaeng Krachan Dam was 102 per cent full and discharging 13.66 million cubic metres of water yesterday; Nam Oun was 103 per cent full and releasing 6.23 million cubic metres of water; while Vajiralongkorn was 86 per cent full and discharging 42.65 million cubic metres of water.

“I am closely monitoring the Nam Oun River’s water level now, because I am worried,” Sompong Pachai, a resident in Sakon Nakhon province, said.

In Chiang Rai province, the Huai Khrai dyke was overwhelmed by Monday night due to heavy rain, and locals living in low-lying areas spent all night moving their belongings to higher ground.

In a related development, the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department yesterday cautioned people living in Surat Thani, Ranong and Phang Nga provinces to beware of possible landslides and mudslides.

In Ranong, a landslide partially blocked more than 100 metres of Phetkasem road.

Meanwhile, in Nakhon Nayok province, which is a few hours drive from Bangkok, relevant authorities are on 24-hour alert in case of emergency.

On Monday, runoffs from the Khao Yai National Park flooded downstream zones, stranding many tourists as well as a team of film crew. This prompted authorities to rush to help.

Nakhon Nayok Governor Nuttapong Sirichaichana called an urgent meeting with several officials following the incident.

A warning has now been issued to 21 villages along Nakhon Nayok River, which can accommodate just 200 cubic metres of water per second.

Though flooding in Nakhon Nayok has subsided without any report of casualties, the Khun Dan Prakarn Chon Dam has now shut its water gates to prevent the river from overflowing.

There were 183 cubic metres of water flowing into the river per second as of press time.

Only watered garden last night, it has been trying to rain, the wind blows whatever clouds that have precipitation away, walking up to the Mun river where we have a weir  installed, the water flow is below the steel gate, so inflow into this region is still low, a down pour would be very nice,

thank you Zeus

I guess they have to look a little bit more philosophical on this matter. Good old Gene Kelly knew exactly how to tackle things like this.

I think a wet room would be a better name for the Department of Things Are Going Swimmingly.

Jim Henson would be appalled at the latest Thai rendition of "The Muppet Show"

PM Prayut may not be any Gene Kelly but he knows how to hold an umbrella.

So torrential downpours are coming. In my mind's eye I can see the Chairman of the Natural Water Resources Commission outside with his arm outstretched to the skies shaking Article 44 at at the rain.

Seems to be a common occurrence these days! lost count off how many warnings we have had that torrential rains were imminent, reality being little to no rain, guess they are thinking well "we told you" if indeed rains do arrive?

it does not rejuvenate us  me

in any case, those who understand, I was eight years old at the release of the movie, but this very scene, unforgettable ?

Water is a very difficult issue to handle. I applaud the Dutch who seem to be the best in the world at solving water issues both in their homeland and in South Africa and other places.

Where's TAT? Disaster tourism is all the rage. Or was that only way back when they still were luring farangs in?

Not more than a few  drops in Phimai in over a month. Everything is bone dry. We could really use a good storm.

Last night ( Friday night ) it started to rain after midnight then turned into a downpour and went on for about 7 hours non stop . Going to look now on the way to Lotus , been told the town is flooded ( Maechan ).
