August 21, 20188 yr Has anyone any experience of regimes to get rid of parasites available in Thailand? My husband has symptoms of various stomach problems, which we are sure are caused by some type of parasite. We have friends who live in the Caribbean and Africa who regularly recognise they have a parasite and there are locally available remedies, either pharmaceutical or herbal, which help to get rid of the blighters. If anyone has any experience of remedies that are available in Thailand please could you let me know. Many thanks. Sue Sent from my iPhone using Thailand Forum - Thaivisa mobile app
August 21, 20188 yr It depends on what type of parasite. Albendazole, readily available everywhere in Thailand (Zentel and other brands) will treat roundworm, hookworm and a few others. Treatment consists of 1-2 doses only so suitable for empiric treatment if no special contraindications. If the problem is giardia or amoeba, though, different treatment is called for that involves longer course of drugs (e.g. flagyl, tinidazole) with significant side effects so not so suitable for self treatment

If your husband is having stomach issues, they are unlikely to be caused by parasites. Gut parasites normally inhabit the intestines, not the stomach. There's a lot of woo woo on the Internet claiming all sorts of symptoms are caused by parasites. The symptoms may have nothing to do with parasites whatsoever. Rather than trying to fix this yourself, see a doctor and get a proper diagnosis. Edited August 22, 20188 yr by Oxx
August 22, 20188 yr Thete is stomach in the medical sense, and "stomach" in the colloquiol. I have found that when posters say "stomach" more often than not they do not mean the stomach but rather elsewhere in the abdomen/GI tract. Even diarrhea may be described sometimes by many lay people as "stomach trouble". That said, I agree the self diagnosis may be off; they most often are.
