webfact
Video: Khao San Road: It's a waiting game as Bangkok landmark awaits decisions on future Picture: MCOT MCOT reported on the state of Khao San Road after the authorities backed down to traders in the area who protested at being turfed out. The status quo in place at the moment allows the traders to set up for business between 6pm and midnight. The "Khap Khaw Mee Khong" report stated that traders rushed to set up their stalls in the early evening given the small window of opportunity to make money. They said that 70 per cent of stalls were selling things like bags and souvenirs and 30% were selling food like Pad Thai and drinks. Traders want the hours expanded. The authorities want order restored but are mindful not to damage what MCOT called a landmark in Bangkok. Many people have criticized the Bangkok Metropolitan Authority (BMA) for attempting to sanitize the city saying that visitors want to see life and vibrancy, not stale and orderly streets. Plans for the future of the street are being discussed and further developments are expected in around one month.
