webfact
Treasurer Scott Morrison to become Australia's next prime minister Treasurer of Australia Scott Morrison arrives for a party meeting in Canberra, Australia August 24, 2018. REUTERS/David Gray/Pool CANBERRA (Reuters) - Treasurer Scott Morrison will be Australia's new prime minister after winning a three-way battle for the leadership of the Liberal party on Friday, with incumbent Malcolm Turnbull not contesting the party ballot. There were three contenders in the leadership vote: former home affairs minister Peter Dutton, who narrowly lost a leadership vote against Turnbull on Tuesday, Morrison and Foreign Minister Julie Bishop. The Liberal party is the senior partner in the ruling conservative coalition that will face an election by May 2019. The Liberal-National government has consistently trailed the opposition Labor party in opinion polls. If Turnbull resigns from parliament, he would leave the new government facing a by-election for his Sydney seat that could see it lose its one-seat majority. Turnbull said on Thursday he believed that former prime ministers are best out of the parliament. 4MyEgo
Wasn't it Scott Morrison who layed his hand over the then PM's shoulder Malcolm Turnball declaring this is my Prime Minster, and the next day Morrison rolled him as PM, snakes in the grass, all of them ! Chris Lawrence
Another Coup. Petty there is no Paul Keating in the wings. He was always good for the gags he gave out. Good treasurer as well, got Hawk in the back.

Thankfully the face of the hard right, Dutton, was rejected.

He probably has more political nous than Turnbull turned out to have, and he's better positioned between left & right in the Liberal Party than Turnbull was so has a better chance of achieving some kind of at least public unity as they stagger towards the next election. The question now is whether MT will actually resign his seat now (which is likely to precipitate either a switch by the GG to Shorten if he can assure a majority in the House, or an immediate (October) election). Places Cosgrove in a difficult position (shades of 1975). Still, this is his reward for being the Hero of Dili ...

All are pesos currencies and all are regularly ahead of Australia in regards to global gdp contribution. The Australian powerhouse contributes between 1.5 and 2 %, similar to the those mentioned above. As stated, Australian Peso. Sorry to deflate your fantasy about the dominant Australian Economy, but in world terms Australia is a minnow, like most nations.

Except of course, that the numbers you cite are based on total contribution by each nation. This doesn't take into account that fact that all these nations have a much larger population than Australia. What counts is the per capita figures. Do you think that the rest of the world values your 1.5% more if you tell them you did it with less people, or are you trying to suggest that if you double your population then you will double your gdp. Yo're the one claiming that Australia is now a third world nation. By the criteria you propose Switzerland at number 20 in gross GDP is even more of an economic basket case, whereas India at number 6 is a highly developed economy. Your contention is obviously and overwhelmingly false.

In the 1980s, working under her married name Julie Gillon, Bishop was deeply involved in some of Slater & Gordon's biggest asbestos cases. Lawyer Peter Gordon told Australian Doctor magazine in 2007: "We had to fight even for the right of dying cancer victims to get a speedy trial. I recall sitting in the WA Supreme Court in an interlocutory hearing for the test cases involving Wittenoom miners Mr Peter Heys and Mr Tim Barrow. CSR was represented by Ms Julie Bishop (then Julie Gillon). (She) was rhetorically asking the court why workers should be entitled to jump court queues just because they were dying." Samantha Maiden, The Sunday Telegraph November 18, 2012. That's a bad taste in mouth from the Black Widow.
