Thai car into Singapore

Featured Replies

Just wondering if anyone has done it and what the requirements are?

Many thanks in advance.

I looked at it a while back whilst I was working in Singapore. I didn't do it in the end, the public transport is just too good.

The LTA website is pretty good on the requirements and limits of stay. I would start there.

Thanks for that - have seen the link and  from that it basically means one has to travel to Singapore first with all the documents, buy insurance and then bring the car in.

given that Thailand allows Singaporean cars in without prior notice I thought that potentially there was a reciprocal arrangement. Might have to head down to DLT and ask.

I think I would park in Malaysia and take public transport from there to Singapore.

Sorry off topic but anyone knows if you can bring a rented car into Malaysia ?  Any companies that allows it ?

I'm not aware that any Thai rental company will let you take their cars out of Thailand.

Interestingly, have found this website:

https://www.onemotoring.com.sg/content/onemotoring/home/driving/entering_and_exiting_singapore/foreign-vehicles-not-registered-in-malaysia.html

"Before entering Singapore, you need to meet certain requirements.

The requirements for Malaysian-registered vehicles also apply to Thailand-registered cars or motorcycles driving into Singapore.  In addition, Thailand-registered vehicles must purchase Malaysian and Singapore insurance coverage for the respective duration of your stay in the 2 countries".

Then below: rules for bringing in Malaysian (and Thai!) vehicles

https://www.onemotoring.com.sg/content/onemotoring/home/driving/entering_and_exiting_singapore/cars-and-motorcycles-registered-in-malaysia.html

I guess the challenge is then, where to get insurance before arrival?

Just one point, a few years back (don't know if it's still the same), it was against strict regulations to take cars into both Malaysia and Singapore with heavily tinted windows.

How do you check the tint on your window? IS there some sort of machine which can do it?

Just rent one. Job done.

can the police and other drivers see the people inside your car from the windshield and front side  windows? if not it is illegal. tented side drivers window so a cop can't see the driver as he approaches a car? illegal.

almost every car in Thailand has tinted windows that are illegal in real countries.

Who wears sunglasses at night while driving with their moronic tinted windshield ? Thailand does!

Kinda defeats the purpose for a road trip, doesn’t it.

Can do, but if you fly n rent it gives you more time to discover new places outside Thailand. That drive to the border isnt that hot if youve done it once, its enough.

The Malaysian police near the border with Thailand do have a machine that can measure the amount of tint. If they dont like what you have they simply make you rip the film off. I doubt that any normal non-Thai car owner would have much trouble.
