import tax due on small purchase from Japan, watch

Featured Replies

I would like to purchase a watch for 6,700 THB from shopee shipped from their shop in Japan, Shipping included but import duties and any other charges would be on top of that. I have never had to pay a surcharge in the past but is that still true?

Are import charges now levied on small purchases from Japan?🙏

I bought a watch from the US last month and had to pay......I think about B2000.

On a watch costing 6,700 baht, the likely Thai import charges would be roughly as follows, assuming the standard 5% import duty applies:

Import duty: 5% of 6,700 = 335 baht

VAT is then charged at 7% on the value plus the import duty:

7% of 7,035 = approximately 492 baht

So the total duty and VAT would be approximately 827 baht, making the landed cost around 7,527 baht, before any courier or customs-clearance fee.

One thing to bear in mind is that Thai Customs generally calculates this using the CIF value. CIF means Cost, Insurance and Freight — essentially the value of the item plus the cost of shipping and insurance to Thailand.

So if the 6,700 baht is just the purchase price and shipping is additional, the actual tax will be slightly higher because the shipping/insurance cost is included in the customs value.

Not only from Japan, from everywhere!

Correct.

Changes were introduced and publicised.

As posted above its CIF value and VAT.

I had a delivery from overseas not long ago and had to produce receipts to prove value.

Thailand has several Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) with countries, which can reduce or eliminate import duties for certain goods.

ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA): Eliminates duties for goods traded between ASEAN countries.

FTA with Japan: Lowers duties on various products from Japan.

As a result, goods imported from countries with FTAs may be exempt from import duties, or enjoy reduced rates.

It would be helpful if you have the tariff code, then you can look it up on Thai customs website. I sometimes buy model kits from Japan, and is exempted from import duties. (Tariff code 9503) I only pay small fee at post office.

If anyone wishes to calculate what the duty and taxes will be (for an import from any country to any other country), use the free calculator at simplyduty.com. I've used it many times. It asks you to enter the price, shipping cost, and any insurance cost.
