Jonathan Fairfield
PHOTOS: Crane collapses in Bangkok A huge crane collapsed at the construction site of a new 8 story condominium next to the Rama 9 road in Bangkok, killing the operator. The accident occurred at around 1pm on Thursday when the crane's boom became detached and toppled from the top of the incomplete 5th floor, narrowly missing the nearby expressway. TNA reported how workers ran for their lives as when the crane began to fall. The crane's operator named as Mr Kriendej Chaikofa was killed. Police and officials from the BMA said that an investigation has been launched into the incident and they are formulating a plan on how best to remove the fallen crane from the construction site. Officials will also check if the fallen crane has damaged any part of the existing construction.
KhaoTan
One of my fears as we have a huge crane within reach of our home should it fall down. If the operator was the only one who died at least that's good. Now how in the hell do they remove that crane? With another crane I suppose. anon789561
Christ another one. Think the last large crane to come down in bkk was only a few months back. seems walking under cranes might be more bad luck than walking under ladders ?

Esso49
When you pay people a next to nothing wage it goes hand in hand with next to nothing safety regimes. The big bosses only preserve their big profits so what do they care if another serf gets killed ?

They probably don't care about the "serfs" but they should care about their cranes if they want to remain profitable.

There have been a number of high profile incidents this year and many fatalities including pedestrians and motorists not even on the work-sites. The reason is down to the poor quality or lack of training, planning, operation, maintenance, inspections, and testing. The other factor is Thai laws regarding lifting operations are antiquated and require review but they haven't got the talent or impetus to make that happen. And many other things falling from construction sites onto and into people's vehicles~or damn close
wvavin
It’s a great blessing to all that only the operator needed to pay for this.
lanista
Most of these construction sites have a big sign out on the gate saying SAFETY FIRST ! with a hard hat pic added to make it look pretty. They put them on some of those unseaworthy ferries too. Thats all the Thai's think that is required. Now we're safe !!!

No, tower cranes collapse for only 2 reasons ,if they are assembled incorrectly,or the load is over extended which the latter is the case in all the mishaps in Bangkok. I worked with cranes for the HSE for 15 years.

Go educate yourself . Floating crane barges are all around the world and there are numerous heavy lift crane barges used in the offshore industry. Just Google crane barges and/or Heavy lift crane barges. And yes by the way they do use them in the Gulf of Thailand.
