Thai Army members to monitor peace process in Nepal

The Royal Thai Army is to assign 20 army officers to join the United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) in March.

The Director-General of the Department of Information and Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Kitti Wasinond (กิตติ วะสีนนท์), said the cabinet has agreed in principle to send Thai troops to investigate the peace process in Nepal at the request of the United Nations.

The Ministry of Defence will send 20 army officers comprising 10 experts and 10 physicians, on a 12-month mandate to monitor arms storage and combating forces, as well as to support and observe transparent general elections to be held in that country.

Mr.Kitti added that the UN has assigned a total of 186 people on arms inspection in Nepal. The number includes unarmed military officers or veterans, civil advisers in the fields of elections, politics and public relations, and UN volunteers to support the election process.
