retirement visa planning

Featured Replies

72 years old. I want to apply for a retirement visa; in my bank account in Thailand  the 800.000 Baht are deposited to age 2 months.

At the moment I have a permission of stay for 30 days which is extendable for only 30 days if the immigration officer agrees. In the event that the immigration does not grant me the desired extension of the stay permit of another 30 days I will have to make a border run by plain and enter again with a new permission of stay.

1- Can I repeat this for a third month, if necessary?

2 - Is my idea right or can it be made easier?

3 - How many times can I enter in Thailand by plain?

Thanks in advance for your comments

You can apply for a one year extension of stay (it is not a visa) at immigration based upon retirement. It will be a 2 step process to do the application.

The first step is apply for a 90 day non immigrant visa (category O) entry at immigration. You will need at least 15 days remaining on your current 30 day entry or the 30 day extension of it. The 800k baht will only need to be in the bank on the date your apply but it will require proof that the funds came from abroad. Requirements are here: https://www.immigration.go.th/content/service_80

Then during the last 30 days of the 90 day entry from the visa you can apply for the extension of stay. The 800 baht will need to be in the bank for 60 days on the date you apply.

Just before your current permission of stay expires why not do an airborne border run to somewhere like Vientiane or Penang and apply for a "retirement" visa in the form of a single-entry non-O on the grounds of being aged 50 or over from the relevant Thai Embassy (Vientiane) or consulate (Penang) there? Upon your return to Thailand you would be granted a 90-day permission of stay on the strength of this visa. Within 30 days of this revised permission to stay expiring you could then apply for your maiden annual retirement extension at your local immigration office.

In this case, the required amount of 800,000 Baht need to be already since 2 months in the account?

For the non immigrant visa application the money does not need to be in the bank for to be in the bank for 60 days (not 2 months as written in the rules)

For the extension of stay application during the last 30 days of the 90 day entry from the visa it will need to be in the bank for 60 days.
