A man was arrested after he allegedly hacked his mother to death with an axe in Nong Bua Lamphu's Na Wang district on Wednesday evening.

Police received a call at 6.30pm asking them to send officers to arrest Suban Kaewthong, 29, who was surrounded by villagers after he fled his house in Ban Khok Charoen village, Tambon Wang Pla Pom.

Suban had allegedly hacked his mother, Wan Butrtaka, 59, to death with an axe and fled until being cornered by villagers in front of a school.

His brother told police that Suban returned home drunk from a funeral and appeared to be talking gibberish, shouting that their mother had been haunted by a ghost.

The taboo of mental illness is strong in this story. The shame causes it to be denied by family members.  Children just don't hack their mother to death, even if "drunk". I expect that there is an underlying mental illness, especially if the accused believed his mother was possessed by a ghost. Delusion like this suggests schizophrenia. Alcohol exacerbates the  illness and facilitates  violent outbursts.

In the coming days, we will see if this man is mentally competent.

BULL CRAP. You must not have been here very long.Boys and men of various ages in LOS where the attitude of the Asian male dominance of disrespect  toward  females in general plus the added effects of alcohol and/or drugs is the very norm ,many time here  leading to violence.

Ah Yes,This reply is today's liberal norm wanting to put the blame on some one else (in this case ,his family) never actually thinking that many times there are just some very bad people in this world.

The Bull Crap statement you made was in respect to your own comment. If you wish to play the knowledge of Thailand card, then surely you should understand that the mother is the dominant presence. Children revere and cherish their mothers. Grandmothers are held even closer to the heart.

Liberal norm? Blaming someone else? Hardly. It is a recognition that schizophrenia is a significant mental illness and it is evident in the Thai general population. Unfortunately it isn't particularly well treated in large part because of the taboo of recognizing mental illness, and you demonstrate the outdated ignorance that surrounds the issue.

The present  position is that the prevalence of just this one type of mental illness in the age 15-59 population is approx. 8.8/1000. Past estimates were much lower IMO because of the taboo of admitting that it exists in Thailand.  Of those 9 people, some will be worse than others, but  at least 3 will be violent with the balance having violent to agitated episodes without medical intervention. I is an undisputed fact that alcohol abuse in schizophrenics will provoke a violent outburst.

Mentally competent or not. He killed his mother with an axe. The death penalty sounds about right for him.!!!

In case you missed it, we are in 2018 and the developed world stopped executing the mentally incompetent 100+ years ago. The danger of people like you is that you do not recognize how dangerous and shortsighted you are. If the accused was a known mentally unstable person, why was he allowed to consume alcohol? Who gave him the booze? And if he was showing signs of being drunk, why was he allowed to keep drinking. Responsibility lies with those who have facilitated and enable his anti-social behavior. In the developed world we hold those who provide the  alcohol to such people liable for the injuries caused. As such if you want to at least be morally superior, you should focus on those who fueled the drunken outburst. Perhaps they can hang those responsible in your front yard.
