BANGKOK — A woman drowned to death in the capital last night, but although seasonal flooding is approaching the capital, experts said Thursday the death was unrelated and Bangkok will likely be spared from the deluge.

Phanumas Sae-tae, 41, drowned Wednesday night in the eastern Bangkok district of Prawet after becoming trapped in her vehicle in a depressed roadway submerged by a flash flood. Her vehicle stalled out in rising waters after she drove into the street near Airport Rail Link Ban Thap Chang. It took seven hours for rescue workers to recover her body.

So far this year the daily Chao Phraya river levels are much lower than last year let alone 2011. Not even close to flooding.

That''s why it's so scary...it should be draining water now from upstream area's....

Mr Canute,   Take a drive from Bangkok going North.   Stop on the way and take a look of the Chaya Praya's flood plains Then at Nakon Sawan speak to the locals and get there concerns. Then take two routes seperately following the Yom and Nan rivers. Have a look around .  Once you have done that then please come back and advise us all.  And by the way Mr Canute , the Yom is a tributary,  amongst others of the Chao Phraya,  you know that one where you tell us is much lower than 2011.

Oh yes nearly forget,  and that moron of a Thai water expert ? give him a ring and take him along too.   Just so he can see that there are other things outside of Bangkok he should be very very concerned about.  It may not be as bad as 2011 as the the tosser in charge of the BMA  at the time ensured that much of the water was diverted to  those NW areas of Bangkok,  you now those areas such as Rangsit and Don Mueng, to name but two,  that just happened to have majority supporters of the last legal PM, Ms Yingluck Shinawatra.

Enjoy your trip.    PS best take an inflatable with you as you could well need it

Actually, the great floods occurred in October 2010 and again in October 2011 onwards. Since then Bangkok has been flooding during heavy rains but are described as "water that must be drained" rather than flood waters. Bangkok has flooded regularly since they moved the capital here from Ayutthaya in the 17th Century. Severe floods occur approximately every 4 years so we are due to receive severe floods in Bangkok this year or next. This is only early September so it too early to predict that there will be no widespread flooding in Bangkok this year. A number of >6metre dia drainage tunnels are being constructed which should be completed by the end of 2019 - 2020.
