Parties Stake Out Positions On ‘sotus’ Hazing

BANGKOK — A representative from Thailand’s newest progressive party said it would work to ban freshmen hazing at universities and schools if it comes to power in the next election.

 

Speaking Sunday at Thammasat University, Pannika Wanich of the Future Forward Party staked out the most aggressive position on practices commonly called SOTUS – Seniority, Order, Tradition, Unity and Spirit – among counterparts from several parties who alternately described it as abusive or merely a flawed tradition.

I hope the Future Forward Party does really well, as it represents a fresh new injection of the younger generation into the stuffy old style politics that is so redundant and an alternative to the tired old same rubbish we keep hearing. However, sadly, they have already attracted the swift contempt of the intolerant dinosaurs who see them as a threat and have tried to close them down asap. Hopefully, many young Thais will see FFP as a party they can relate too and vote for it.

I agree, I think a lot of Thais are sick of the same ol'. On a personal and selfish level, I'm not looking forward to an election. There's enough criminal behavior in play these days without adding politically motivated violence to the mix.
