Of course I agree with you, Jeremy50, that that particular guy is speaking in a more reasonable manner than the Scotsman. My experience (and I think that of many of us) is that generally speaking one will get a much more pleasant living experience in Thailand if one smiles at, and is pleasant towards, the Thais who surround one. On the whole, I do find the Thais very helpful people; on the other hand, they can be extremely selfish - so we don't know how much that Scots guy has had to put up with. If we knew more, it might provide him with mitigating circumstances. On the other hand - the Thai boss of that garage does seem to be a sensible and calm and reasonable guy. So on balance - I suspect that the Scots chap went dangerously over the top and gave a perfect example of how NOT to behave when interacting with Thais.

Is it just me? We do not use the word "topless" for men. Ever. 

 

They are misusing the word here. It is really a juicy, exciting word when used properly.

That's a very true point, Utalkin2me: we don't ever actually use the word 'topless' with reference to men. It is always (in my experience) used of women (particularly women on a beach). If a guy is not wearing a shirt, we tend to say he is 'bare-chested'.

 

And now someone will find a reference to 'topless men' and prove me wrong - ha ha!

Yeah, I do not have a handle on the "British Dialect" or whatever you would call it. But yes, nobody ever says "hey check out that topless dude over there" in the states. Lol.

Thais have very little respect for others when it comes to making noise. No concept of noise pollution.

He is correct despite your grumblings. You are not allowed to make a noise at night, it is illegal and if it's reported to the local authorities they will act.

I must gripe that the title is misleadingly disappointing.   The word topless is to my understanding used to refer to a woman not wearing a top whilst a man is referred to as "shirtless".

West end near the uni. I lived in Glasgow for four years.

This is a non-issue in rural Thailand, and for that matter, within the sub-districts of most cities.  Thai men walk around without their shirts on.  Trying to say they don't and that men, especially farang men, without shirts is an affront to Thai culture is utter and complete nonsense.

Noisy? I had the volume on my Mac turned up to full and could not hear a thing. Very muted for a story on noise.

The rule is Thai law and Thai legislation regarding work in such cirumstances and locations. Good on the Brits for defending their rights and the rights of their Yjai neighbours.

Nobody likes noise, including most Thais i know, but these 2 men acted like they own the place.

If the place where you live is too noisy, why don't you relocate ?

This is what i try to come to thailand to get away from , hope the thai authorities sort them out , no matter how you try to tell these farlangs they wont comprehend , the vast majority of farlangs understand just get a few that spoil it
