PM at UN warns of interference

Featured Replies

Addressing the UN General Assembly in New York, the Prime Minister informed the world leaders about the election in Cambodia and the interference by foreign countries in Cambodian affairs. He spoke of Cambodia’s governance by rule of law, of its resolute respect for multi-party democracy, and of the free and fair elections that enabled its citizens to choose their national leadership.

He reminded that the 2018 election, with 20 registered political parties, had a high voter turnout, ran smoothly with neither coercion nor violence; this surely demonstrated a legitimate representation of pluralist politics. “By their votes, Cambodians reaffirmed their desire for peace, stability and long-lasting sustainable development.” The premier reported of external circles that still fail to recognize the integrity of the election process and try to interfere in Cambodia’s domestic affairs by issuing statements putting the election’s outcome in question.

“Such actions are a serious assault on the will of the Cambodian people.” Furthermore, unilaterally imposed sanctions are now a popular method among powerful nations to enforce their international policies, driven by their geopolitical agendas. This is using brutal force to impose their will on other sovereign states; some countries use human rights as an excuse to intrude.
